Chapter 71

The airship dropped them at the edge of Dead River Town by dusk. Zach felt the new blue blade riding steady on his back now. But steel meant nothing if he did not know what he faced. The survivor's words haunted him. Dark that moved under doors. He would not lead his people into that blind. He turned to the group. "We split up," he said. "Raven and I take the tavern. Talon and Lyra check the forest edge. We meet before full dark." Talon nodded once. Raven's brother had faked his death for five years to guard this family, and he still moved like a shadow. He touched Lyra's arm and drew her toward the tree line. Lyra had guided Zach's group for years with her elven senses. She looked back at Raven. "If it's out there, I'll feel it before it feels us," she said. Then the two slipped into the dark trees and were gone. The tavern was half empty. Faces turned when Zach and Raven entered, then turned away fast. Zach ordered ale he did not want and set coins on the wood. "We came about the villages," he said. The room went quiet. An old fisherman gripped his cup. Raven leaned close to a woman scrubbing mugs. Raven was Princess of Hazelfen, but here she spoke soft and plain, the way she once hunted. "Please," she said. "Our children sleep south of here. We need to know." The woman broke. "It ain't beasts," she whispered. "It comes at night. A black fog. Rolls low across the ground. Seeps under every door and window. When it clears, the house is empty. No blood. No bodies. Nothing." The fisherman spoke up. "It hates fire. My neighbor kept torches burning all night. His house was the only one it passed." Another man added, "It came from the river. The old river." Zach's chest tightened. Not claws. Not steel or swords. A fog that ignored walls and feared flame. His blade could not cut mist. But now he knew its shape. The tavern door banged open. Talon stood there, breathing hard, both katanas already drawn. Lyra pushed in behind him, her staff glowing pale. "It's real," she said. "I felt it. Not one heartbeat out there. A hollow moving through the trees, cold, coming this way." Her purple eyes found Zach's. "It's coming for this town. Tonight." The villagers scrambled from their seats. Zach stood and drew the blue blade. It caught the firelight. "Torches," he said. "Every one you have. Light them now." He turned to Lyra. "You said it fears fire. Then we give it fire." The uncertainty was gone. He knew what the dark was, and he knew its weakness. For the first time since the river, Zach had a plan. "Wake the town," he said. "We don't run. We burn it back."
