Chapter 26

They ran east through the trees until the torches fell behind. Kaine stopped in a shallow bowl of stone where the ground was flat and clear. He turned and faced Zeph. The bracelet on Zeph's wrist caught the moonlight. "They'll ring this hollow in minutes," Kaine said. "You can't outrun them with a partial form. Finish it here or die tired." "Finish it how? Zento said three breaths." "Three breaths is the door. Not the room." Kaine set two fingers on Zeph's chest, over the coal. "Call it. Then don't let go when it tells you to. Refuse the ending the way you refused the tiger." Zeph opened Refusal and Stillness together. Gold ran down his arms and stopped at his wrists. One breath. Two. On the third the coal pulled at him to release. He named what he would not accept. Not the retreat. Not the small window. Not the shape of a man who could only stand for four breaths. The gold climbed past his wrists. It ran up his neck. His hair lifted and held. The bracelet on his wrist grew warm and quiet. Behind his sternum the coal cracked open and something older stepped through it. His eyes went white. The trees around him blurred at the edges, then sharpened. He could see each torch as a slow orange smear moving between trunks. He could hear each footfall before it landed. Kaine stepped back. "That's the old form. The one before the myths." The first men entered the hollow. Zeph did not choose to move. His body moved. He was on the near one before the man's sword cleared its sheath. A palm to the chest and the man folded. The next two he passed between without touching, and they dropped a beat later. He counted twelve in the trees and met each one at the place their next step would land. None of them touched him. When it was done he stood in the center of the hollow. The gold sat steady under his skin. The old air in his chest did not scatter. Zento was there without arriving. The small old man walked a slow circle around him and stopped. "You found the room," Zento said. "The forms before Windchill named them. Stillness of the hand. Refusal of the ending. Others." He tapped Zeph's forehead once. "They are in you now. You will learn each when it is needed." Zeph let the gold go. His knees held. The coal was still there, banked, waiting. Kaine looked east. The wind carried a new sound through the trees. Not torches. Boots in formation, and something heavier behind them. "They heard that," Kaine said. "All of them. Windchill is coming itself now." Zeph pulled the bracelet tight on his wrist and started walking toward the sound.
