Zeph walked toward the sound of boots until Kaine caught his sleeve and pulled him behind a low ridge of stone. The formation was closer than the wind had suggested. Torchlight cut through the trees in a wide line, and behind the line something taller moved without a torch. Kaine pointed at Zeph's chest. "Call it now. Not when they're on us. If the old form doesn't answer the first time you ask, you're dead before the second try." Zeph opened Refusal and Stillness together. The coal behind his sternum lit. Gold ran to his wrists and stopped. He waited for the climb past his neck. It did not come. He named the retreat. He named the small window. The gold held at his wrists and went no further. He let it go before it could sour. "It won't come on command," Zeph said. "Then find what it wants," Kaine said. "Fast." Zeph knelt and pressed his palm flat to the stone. He closed his eyes. He did not try to meditate. He asked. Zento was there without arriving, standing on the rock in white pants and a blue sash, arms folded. "The door to me is closing," Zento said. "They're already on you. Listen. The old form is not a tool you pick up. It is a room you enter when you refuse to leave the fight." He tapped the bracelet on Zeph's wrist. "You called it before by refusing the ending. Refuse it before the ending arrives. Choose the room, then step into it." "How." "Name who stands when no one else remains. Then be him." Zento was gone. Boots crunched forty paces off. Kaine drew a short blade Zeph had not seen him carry. Zeph stood. He did not open the doors first. He said the name of the man who stands when no one else remains, and he said it as himself, not as a wish. The bracelet warmed. The coal cracked. Gold ran up his arms without being called, climbed his neck, lifted his hair. His eyes went white before the first soldier cleared the trees. The line entered the hollow in formation. Zeph met the front rank at the place their next step would land. He moved through six men before the seventh raised a shield. His body chose the Stillness of the hand and the shield split down the grain. The heavier shape behind the line stopped at the tree edge and did not step forward. When the hollow was quiet, Zeph released the form on his own breath. His knees held. The coal banked. Kaine lowered the blade. "You called it. It answered." The heavier shape at the tree line turned and walked back into the dark. Boots followed it. Somewhere past the ridge a horn sounded once, long and low, and did not sound again.
