Chapter 32

Zeph stepped out of the stone building into gray morning light. Kaine came behind him and pulled the door shut. The candle held steady under Zeph's ribs. He knew three names inside the old form, and he knew he had not yet chained them in a fight. That was the test now. The archers on the ridge would not wait for him to learn. Kaine pointed through the trees. "Bowmen there. Six, maybe eight. Foot troops climbing the near slope. They'll loose before you close the ground." "How long do I have." "Twenty counts. Less." Zeph tightened the bracelet against his wrist and named the one who stands when no one else remains. The candle opened into a wider room. He did not step through. He stood in the door the way Zento had taught him. The first arrow came. He named Stillness of the hand. His arm moved without him and knocked the shaft down. Two more came together. He held Stillness one breath longer. Both fell at his feet. Then a volley. Six arrows in the air at once. Too many to still. "Refuse it," Kaine said behind him. Zeph released Stillness and named Refusal of the ending. Heat ran through his chest. The volley broke apart in the air as if the wind had turned. He did not understand how. He did not need to. The foot troops crested the slope. A soldier with a short blade came in fast, blade already at Zeph's throat before he could still or refuse. The third name rose on its own. Return of the step. He was not where the blade was. He was a pace to the left, and the soldier stumbled through empty air. Zeph named Stillness again and put a hand on the man's chest. The soldier dropped. Another volley came. Zeph named Refusal. The arrows scattered. Two more soldiers rushed him. Return of the step, then Stillness. They fell. He felt the chain now — not one long hold, but short calls, one name at a time, each answering the moment. Zento had said the door would hand him the rest. It had. On the ridge, the archers lowered their bows. A horn sounded twice — retreat. The foot troops broke and ran. Zeph let the candle shrink. The wider room closed. He stood breathing in the cold, still on his feet. Kaine walked out and looked at the arrows in the snow. "You chained three. In a fight." "I did." "Then they know now. Not just that you have a form. That you can use it against numbers." Kaine's yellow eyes went back to the ridge. "Whoever's leading them will not send archers next. They'll send whatever they were saving." Zeph nodded. The bracelet was warm against his skin. He had answered this fight. The next one would be worse.
