Chapter 33

The retreat horn had gone quiet an hour ago. Zeph sat on the steps of the stone building with the bracelet warm on his wrist and the candle steady under his ribs. Kaine crouched beside him, sorting spent arrows by length. Zeph had chained three names in a real fight. He knew now that three would not be enough for what came next. "They watched the whole time," Kaine said. "Whoever's leading them saw the pattern. Stillness. Refusal. Return. Three moves. They'll bring something the three can't answer." "Then I need a fourth." Kaine looked up. His yellow eyes held on Zeph. "Zento said the door hands you the names as the moment calls for them. You can't pick one off a shelf." "Then I have to stand in the door until the moment calls." Zeph went inside. The stone building was quiet, its old markings faint on the walls. He sat cross-legged on the cold floor and named the one who stands when no one else remains. The candle widened. He did not step through. He held the door open and waited. Zento appeared across from him, bare-chested, white hair rough on his head, the mark on his brow bright. He did not sit. "You came back too soon," Zento said. "The three are not settled in you." "They won't be enough. Kaine says the next wave will break them." "Kaine is right." "Then give me the fourth." Zento shook his head. "I cannot give what you have not paid for. The names are not gifts. Each one costs." "Tell me the cost." Zento studied him a long breath. "The fourth is not a strike. It is a stand. It answers what none of the others answer — the moment you are already beaten. To pay for it you must name a thing you cannot survive. Not refuse it. Name it. Hold it in your mouth without flinching." Zeph's throat tightened. He thought of Keji in the snow with the tiger over him. He tried to say it. His breath caught. The candle guttered. "You flinched," Zento said. "The door closes on a flinch." "Give me again." "There is no again today. You cannot pay half. You know this." The candle steadied but did not widen. The wider room stayed closed to him. Zento faded. Zeph opened his eyes. Kaine stood in the doorway. "No fourth," Zeph said. "No." Outside, far off through the trees, a low drum started. Not a horn. A drum, slow and heavy, the kind that moved troops in step. Kaine's jaw set. "That's not archers. That's not foot soldiers with short blades." He looked at Zeph. "Three names. That's what you have." Zeph stood. The bracelet was warm. The candle held. He had failed the fourth and the drum was already coming.
