Chapter 35

Kaine lifted the bar and the door swung wide. Cold air pushed in. The drum stopped. That was worse than the sound of it. Zeph stepped onto the flat stone in front of the building. Kaine came out at his shoulder, one hand on the pendant at his chest. Across the clearing, past the last trees, torches held steady in a curved line. Someone in that line was waiting for him to move first. "They want you to open with the form," Kaine said. "Don't. Stand in the door. Let them come to you." Zeph pressed his feet into the stone. The bracelet warmed against his wrist. He named the floor, the bracelet, Kaine at his back, the candle under his ribs. The door under him held. He reached, without reaching, and Zento was there behind his eyes. "The fourth name asks a price," Zento said. "Name the thing you cannot survive. Say it plain. No flinch." Zeph tried Keji. His throat closed. He tried the tiger. His jaw locked. He tried Kaine and his knees went soft under him. Every name was a wall. "Then it is not any of them," Zento said. "Name what you cannot survive." Zeph opened his eyes. The torches had moved a step. He looked at his own hand on the stone. He looked at the candle he could feel without seeing it. He understood what he had been avoiding. "Myself," he said. "I cannot survive losing myself. If the form takes me and I don't come back, there is no one left to stand." He did not flinch. The word sat in his mouth like a coin. Behind his eyes, Zento nodded once. A fourth name dropped into place beside the other three. Zeph did not know it yet, but he felt the shape of it, cold and ready, waiting for the moment it would be needed. Gold ran up his arms. His hair lifted. His eyes went white and then gold at the edges. The partial form he had held for three breaths held now without counting. The candle widened into a steady lamp. He was still Zeph inside it. That was the difference. Kaine looked at him and let out a breath he had been holding for a day. "There you are." The line of torches began to move. Not walking. Running. "They saw it," Kaine said. "They're not waiting anymore." Zeph stepped down off the stone. The gold stayed level under his skin. He named the three he already knew. The fourth he left sheathed. "Stay behind me until I call you," he said. Kaine drew a short blade. "Call soon." The first runners broke the tree line. Zeph walked to meet them, and for the first time the form walked with him instead of through him.
