Chapter 36

The first runner came at Zeph with a spear held low. Zeph named Stillness of the hand. The spear stopped six inches from his chest. He named Return of the step and was behind the man before the man could turn. He broke the spear across his knee and kept walking. Kaine stayed on the stone behind him, blade ready, watching the tree line. Four more came in a wedge. Zeph named Refusal of the ending and moved through them like water finds a crack. Two went down at the shoulders. One dropped his sword. The last swung wide and Zeph let the swing pass, then put him on his back with a flat palm. The gold held steady under his skin. The candle in his chest stayed lit. He was still Zeph. He counted that inside himself like a coin. Then the ground shifted. Not the earth. Him. A heavier man came out of the trees with a two-handed hammer and something dark braided into the head. Zeph named Stillness. The hammer slowed. It did not stop. It kept coming, and inside Zeph the gold surged past the lamp and reached for the whole room. His vision went white at the edges. His hands wanted to move without him. He felt the form lean forward, hungry, and he felt himself lean back to make space for it. The bracelet on his wrist went cold. "Zeph." Kaine's voice, close. "Name it." He knew the fourth name now. He had left it sheathed because he had hoped not to need it. The hammer was one step away. "Myself," Zeph said. "I cannot survive losing myself." The fourth name dropped into his hand like a key turning. The gold pulled back inside his skin. His vision cleared. He saw the hammer as one thing, moving at one speed, and he stepped inside its arc. He put his palm on the man's sternum and named Return of the step. The man flew back into the two behind him and all three went down in a pile. Zeph stood in the clearing with the form level under his ribs. His hands were his own. His name was still in his mouth. Behind his eyes, Zento nodded once and was gone. The remaining torches backed into the trees. Someone in the dark blew a horn twice, short. A recall. Kaine came down off the stone. "You held." "I held," Zeph said. He released the form the way he had learned, one breath at a time. The gold left his hair last. His knees did not buckle. The candle stayed lit inside him, small and steady. "They'll come back with something worse," Kaine said. "They know four names now." Zeph looked east, past the ridge, toward Windchill. "Let them." He turned the bracelet on his wrist. The fourth name sat quiet beside the other three, tested and true.
