Chapter 37

The horn faded into the trees. Zeph stood in the clearing with the four names quiet inside him, and knew they were not enough. The partial form held for a handful of breaths. Windchill would come back with numbers his four names could not answer. He needed the full shape the old myths named. He needed it before dawn. "You're bleeding under the eye," Kaine said. He wiped his blade on a dead man's sleeve and sheathed it. "Sit down before you fall down." "I can't sit." Zeph turned the bracelet on his wrist. The stones felt warm. "Four names hold this wave. They won't hold the next. I felt the ceiling when I named Myself. There's a room above it I can't reach." Kaine looked at him a long moment. His brother. His grandmother's bracelet on his brother's wrist. "Then we go back to the hall," Kaine said. "Zento's door opens wider in the old stones." They walked back through the trees to the cracked stone building. The steps were scarred from the last fight. Zeph sat cross-legged on the top stair and closed his eyes. Kaine stood behind him with the blade across his knees. Zeph named the bracelet. He named the floor. He named Kaine at his back. The candle in his chest steadied. He stepped up to the door without crossing it and called Zento. Zento came. White hair. White eyes. A boy's body with an old man's stillness. He stood on the other side of the door and did not smile. "You want the full form," Zento said. "I want to live through tomorrow." "The full form is not four names stacked higher. It is one name under all of them. You have not found it yet." "Tell me." "I cannot. If I name it, it is mine. It has to be yours." Zeph reached for the door anyway. He pushed. The door did not move. He pushed harder and the candle in his chest guttered. He felt the gold buck under his ribs, hungry the way it had been under the hammer. He pulled his hand back. "I can't force it," Zeph said. "No," Zento said. "And you cannot buy it tonight. You are not ready. Hold what you have. Live. Come back for the rest." Zento stepped back from the door and was gone. Zeph opened his eyes. The sky over the ridge was gray. Kaine was watching him. "Well?" "He said no." Zeph stood up. His legs held. "Not tonight. I have four names. That's what I have." Kaine nodded once, slow. "Then we don't stand here and wait for the next drum. We move." A horn sounded from the west ridge. Closer than the last one. Then a second horn answered it from the north. Two columns. Zeph turned the bracelet on his wrist and started down the steps.
