Chapter 38

Zeph came down the steps with the two horns still calling each other across the ridge. West column. North column. They would close on the stone hall inside the hour. He had no ground left to sit on. No quiet to reach for a name deeper than the four he had. "West is closer," Kaine said. He kept pace at Zeph's shoulder, blade drawn. "North is bigger. If we run east again they pin us against open ground." "Then we don't run." Zeph stopped at the base of the steps. The old cracked building sat behind them, its carved doors still open. "I need one more try at the deeper name. I can't sit in the woods with drums in both ears. I sit here." "You'll get an arrow in the back before you find it." "Then hold the steps." Kaine's jaw worked. He looked up at the hall his brother had bled inside for two nights. His grandmother's bracelet caught the gray light on Zeph's wrist. "One try," he said. "If they reach the tree line, I drag you out by the hair." "Fair." Zeph climbed back up and sat cross-legged in the doorway itself, half in, half out. He could still hear the horns. He wanted to hear them. He named the stone under him. He named the bracelet. He named Kaine on the stairs below. The candle in his chest lit. He stepped up to the door and did not push. He waited. Zento came. White hair. White eyes. The boy with the old man's stillness stood on the other side and said nothing at first. "I can't leave," Zeph said. "They're coming from two sides. I asked wrong last time. I asked for the name so I could win. Ask me now." Zento tilted his head. "What are you?" Zeph opened his mouth and closed it. Four names moved under his ribs and none of them answered. He thought of Keji in the snow. He thought of the tiger he had refused. He thought of the young Saiyan dying at a door he had shut. "I'm the one who keeps going after I've spent everything," he said. "I'm the one who doesn't stop." Zento did not smile. But the door thinned. It did not open. It thinned. Zeph felt a fifth shape settle under the four, quiet, unfinished. Not a full name. A root the full name would grow from. "Hold that," Zento said. "Bring it back alive." He was gone. A horn blew from the tree line. Close. Kaine's voice came up the steps, tight. "Zeph. Now." Zeph opened his eyes. The four names sat where they had. Under them, warm, a fifth thing waited. He stood. His legs held. "I have something," he said. "Not the form. A start." Kaine was already moving. "Then start on the run."
