Chapter 39

They came down the steps at a run. The west horn sounded again, closer now, and Zeph felt the fifth shape sitting under his ribs like a coal that had not caught. A root without a tree. He had a start and nothing more. "Tree line in three counts," Kaine said. He glanced at the bracelet on Zeph's wrist, then at Zeph's face. "You look half here." "The fifth name's a fragment. If I open the door on it, it'll snap. I'll drop mid-fight." "Then don't open it." "I have to. Four won't hold this wave." Kaine pulled him behind a slab of fallen stone at the edge of the clearing. Arrows hit the wall above them and broke. "Deepen it here. I'll buy you the counts." "Kaine—" "Sit down." Zeph sat. He put his palm on the stone. He named the stone. He named the bracelet warm against his pulse. He named Kaine breathing above him with a blade out. The candle in his chest lit. He did not step into the door. He knelt at its foot and put the fragment in front of him like a stone he had carried up a hill. Zento stood on the other side. He looked smaller than before. Tired. He looked at the fragment and then at Zeph. "You said a root," Zeph said. "Roots need dirt. What do I feed it?" "What you have already spent," Zento said. "Name one thing you kept going after." Zeph thought of Keji in the snow with the elixir empty in his hand. He thought of the door he had closed on the dying Saiyan. He thought of the tiger he had refused three times. "I kept going after Keji," he said. "After I spent him. I kept going after the tiger. After I spent her. After I spent myself at the door." The fragment sank into the floor of the door and did not come back up. It did not become a full name. It became ground. Under the four names, something flat and quiet spread out and held them up. "Now it won't snap," Zento said. "It won't grow tonight either. Stand on it." He was gone. An arrow struck the slab. Kaine grabbed Zeph's collar. "Up. They're in the clearing." Zeph stood. He reached for the first name and the fifth held under it, steady, unlit but solid. His legs did not shake. He looked at Kaine and Kaine saw it in his face and nodded once. "Stillness," Zeph said, and the world slowed a half step. He moved into the tree line with Kaine at his shoulder. He had not grown the fifth name. He had rooted it. It would carry the four through the wave. After that, he would need what he still did not have.
