Chapter 40

They crossed the tree line and the fight came down on them. Kaine took the right side with his blade. Zeph took the left with the four names stacked on the rooted fifth. The ground under him felt solid the way a floor feels solid: borrowed, poured by other hands, holding him up because he had named the losses that made it. He called Stillness of the hand. A spear stopped a finger from his throat. He called Return of the step and was behind the man who threw it. He called Refusal of the ending and the second wave broke on him without moving him back. He called Myself and did not slip. Four soldiers dropped. Six more came through the pines. The rooted fifth held under the four like packed earth, but he could feel its edge. It was ground borrowed from Keji, from the tiger, from the door he had closed on a dying man. It was not his own dirt. When the sixth soldier swung, the ground under the fifth name shifted a hair, and Zeph's next step landed wrong. Kaine saw it. "Zeph." "I know." He took an arrow in the shoulder. He killed the archer with Return of the step and knelt behind a stump. Blood ran down his arm. The bracelet on his wrist was warm. He put his palm on the dirt and did not go through the door. He knelt at its foot the way he had before. Zento was there. Smaller. Waiting. "The ground's not mine," Zeph said. "It's theirs. What do I put in it that's mine?" "What have you kept going toward," Zento said, "not away from." Zeph thought. Not Keji spent. Not the tiger refused. Something he had walked toward on his own feet. "I walked at the commander," he said. "Nobody made me. I walked at the hammer. I walked at the door tonight when Kaine said run." He named it out loud. "I keep walking toward it." The rooted ground under the fifth name did not grow. It changed color. The borrowed dirt held, and a thin seam of his own ran through it. Small. Real. Enough to stand on without borrowing every step. Zento nodded once and was gone. Zeph stood. The arrow was still in his shoulder. He left it. He called Stillness and Myself together and the fifth held them without shifting. He moved back into the line. Kaine covered his bad side without being asked. They cleared the pines in a hundred breaths. The last soldiers turned and ran. A horn sounded far behind them, calling the next column. Kaine broke the arrow shaft off clean. "You've got your own ground now." "A seam of it," Zeph said. "Not a field." "A seam is enough to stand on." Zeph looked east, where the next horn answered the first. A seam would carry him to the next fight. It would not carry him to the full form.
