Chapter 41

They ran east until the horns fell behind them. Zeph's shoulder bled through the cloth Kaine had tied over the broken shaft. The seam of his own ground held under his four names and the rooted fifth, but the fifth felt no wider than it had at dawn. He needed more. Kaine had been teaching him the deeper form for two days. Zeph could feel Kaine running out of things to say. They stopped in a stand of pines. Kaine sat on a log and put his blade across his knees. Zeph waited. Kaine did not speak for a long time. "I've given you what I know," Kaine said. "The four names. The root under them. The seam you found on your own last night. That's the end of what our line passed down." "There's a full form. Zento said it exists." "He said it. He didn't teach it to me. Nobody taught it to me." Kaine looked at his hands. "I'm your brother in blood. I'm not your ancestor. I was never the one who was going to open that last door." Zeph sat down across from him. The bracelet on his wrist felt heavier than it had an hour ago. He pressed his palm to the dirt and knelt at the foot of the door without going through. Zento was there. Standing. "Kaine's out of names," Zeph said. "I know." "So am I." "You aren't. You have a seam. Widen it." "How." Zento did not answer. He turned and walked back into the dark behind the door. The door did not close. It stayed open a hand's width, waiting. Zeph opened his eyes. A bird landed on the log beside Kaine. Blue and purple feathers, marks like small writing along the wings. The same bird Zento had sent before. It looked at Zeph and did not move. "He's telling you to follow it," Kaine said. "Not me." "You're coming." "I'll cover your back to where it takes you. Then you go in without me." Kaine's voice was flat. "I taught you what I had. The last step isn't mine to give." Zeph stood. The seam under his fifth name held his weight. It was thin. It was his. "Then I widen it myself," he said. "Yes." The bird lifted off and flew low between the trees. Zeph followed. Kaine came behind him with the blade drawn, watching the pines for movement. Behind them a horn sounded again, closer than the last one. Ahead, the bird flew straight, not turning. Zeph did not know what it was leading him to. He knew only that Kaine would not be at the end of it, and that the full form would have to come from ground he had not yet named. He kept walking toward it.
