Chapter 42

The bird led them to a clearing at the foot of a stone hall. Cracked steps rose to a doorway carved with old marks. Zeph had never seen it before, but he knew the shape. Another ancestral training ground. The bird landed on the top step and folded its wings. Kaine stopped at the tree line and did not follow. "This is where I stop," Kaine said. Zeph turned. "I'm not ready." "You're as ready as I can make you." Kaine sheathed his blade. "My bond is holding your seam together. You can feel it. When I turn around and walk, that pull goes with me. You'll have to hold the ground on your own." Zeph felt for the seam under his fifth name. It was warm. Kaine's presence ran through it like a wire. He had leaned on that wire for two days without knowing. "Then don't turn around yet," Zeph said. "I have to. That's the point." Kaine stepped back once. "Widen it before I'm gone. Or widen it because I'm gone. Either way, brother." Zeph climbed the steps. He knelt in the doorway and pressed his palm to the stone. The bracelet on his wrist caught the light. He shut his eyes and found the door. Zento was there. Waiting. "He's leaving," Zeph said. "Yes." "When he goes the seam will tear." "It will thin. What you do next decides whether it tears." "Tell me what to name." Zento shook his head. "Name what holds when he is gone. Not the bracelet. Not me. Something under both." Zeph opened his eyes. Behind him, Kaine's boots scraped stone. One step. Two. The seam pulled after him. Zeph felt the ground under his fifth name start to lift, the way a rug lifts when someone drags the corner. His four names above it wobbled. The candle in his chest guttered. He pressed his palm harder to the step. He said it out loud so he could hear it. "I keep going when the ones who taught me are gone." The words landed in the seam and did not slide off. He said it again. The pull from Kaine's retreating steps kept dragging, but the ground under Zeph did not follow it. It stayed. It widened. Not by much. A finger's width. Enough. Behind his sternum the candle steadied and grew. Gold ran up his arms in a thin line and stopped where he told it to stop. His hair lifted at the roots. His eyes, when he opened them, threw light on the stone. Kaine had stopped at the tree line, watching. "Go," Zeph said. His voice was his own. Kaine nodded once and stepped into the pines. The seam held. Zeph stood alone on the steps in a form that was partway to gold and fully his. A horn sounded, far off, coming east.
