Chapter 43

The horn came again, closer. Zeph stood on the cracked steps in his new partway form, gold running clean up his arms, hair lifted, eyes bright. He could hold this. He had proved that. But he had felt the eastern horn's weight the moment it sounded. Whatever carried it was not archers. His partway form would not be enough when it arrived. He knelt again in the doorway. The bracelet on his wrist warmed under his palm. He shut his eyes and reached for the door. Zento stood in it. The small figure with white hair and white eyes did not smile. He never did before a hard question. "You felt the horn," Zento said. "Yes." "You know what you have will not hold against it." "Yes." "Then stop asking me for the next name. I have given you every name I can give." Zeph opened his mouth. Closed it. "Then what do I do." "You look under the seam. Not at it. Under it. Tell me what is there." Zeph pressed down through his own chest the way he had learned. Past the candle. Past the seam he had widened alone that morning. Past the five names stacked on it. He went further than he had gone before. He found a small dark room. In it, a boy sat with his hands open. Not fighting. Not refusing. Just sitting. Waiting to see what came. "Who is that," Zeph said. "You. Before anyone taught you a name for what you are." "He isn't doing anything." "He is watching. That is the thing under refusal. Refusal needs something to refuse. Watching does not." Zeph reached for the boy. The boy looked up. "Name him," Zento said. Zeph tried. He said, "I see before I decide." The words landed but did not lock. He tried again. "I am the one who watches first." It slid. His chest tightened. The horn outside sounded a third time. Closer. "Do not force," Zento said. "That is the whole lesson. You cannot refuse your way into this one." Zeph let his shoulders drop. He stopped reaching. He sat in his own dark room next to the boy and watched with him. The seam under his fifth name did not widen. It deepened. A shaft opened straight down under the ground he had built. He could not see the bottom. He pulled back to the doorway and opened his eyes. Gold still ran up his arms. Nothing about the surface had changed. But he felt the shaft under him now, empty and waiting. He stood. He had not reached the full form. He had found where it lived. That would have to be enough for the thing coming east. The horn sounded a fourth time. Close enough now to hear the drum behind it. Zeph stepped down off the stairs and walked toward the sound.
