Chapter 44

Zeph walked toward the drum with the shaft still open under him. The gold ran clean up his arms. The bracelet warmed on his wrist. But every step reminded him what he was carrying. The new well of power sat under his ribs with no walls around it. If he opened it fully, it would push out through his bones before it pushed out through his hands. Kaine stepped out of the trees to his right and matched his pace. Zeph's blood brother wore the same red robe he had worn since the ancient hall, the blue stone at his chest catching the low sun. Kaine had said he was done teaching. He had come anyway. "You feel it," Kaine said. He did not look at Zeph. He looked at the ridge where the drum was. "It has nowhere to go," Zeph said. "If I pull on it, it breaks me first." "Then don't pull on it. Stand on top of it and use what you already have." "That won't be enough." "I know." The first rank came over the ridge. Heavier than archers. Shields locked. Behind them a single tall figure carried the drum on a strap and beat it once as he walked. Zeph knelt in the grass. Kaine planted himself between Zeph and the ridge without a word. Zeph shut his eyes and dropped through the doorway. The small dark room was there. The boy was still sitting, hands open. Zento stood in the corner in his white pants and blue sash, arms folded. "It has no vessel," Zeph said. "I open it, I die." "Then give it one," Zento said. "I don't know how to build one." "You are not building. You are borrowing. Ask the boy." Zeph looked at the boy. The boy raised his open hands a little, palms up. Not offering power. Offering to hold it. Zeph understood. The shaft did not need walls he made. It needed the boy to sit inside it. The part of him that watched before it decided. The part that did not push. He named it out loud in the doorway. "He holds it. I use it." The shaft under him closed around the boy like a hand closing around a coal. It did not burn. It sat. Zeph opened his eyes. Kaine was already moving. Zeph rose behind him, drew a thin line of the new power up through the boy's open hands, and fed it into his fifth name. His arms went bright. Not gold. Gold with a white core. He took the front rank in one pass. Shields split. The drummer stopped drumming and ran. Zeph let the line close. His chest did not crack. The candle still burned. The shaft still waited under it, held now, not sealed. Kaine looked at him. "That will hold for one fight. Maybe two." "Then we move before the third," Zeph said.
