Chapter 45

The drum started again before Zeph's breath had steadied. Kaine wiped his blade on the grass and turned toward the sound. Two ranks this time, and something heavier walking behind them. Zeph felt the shaft under his ribs shift. The boy inside it held, but the walls of the fifth name were thinning where the new power pressed against them. One more pass like the last and the vessel would split. "It won't hold," Zeph said. "The name is cracking around him." Kaine did not turn. "Then stop borrowing from the top. Go down and set him deeper." "How?" "Ask." Zeph dropped to one knee in the wet grass. He pressed the bracelet against his sternum and shut his eyes. The doorway opened faster now. The small room was there, the boy sitting cross-legged with his palms open, gold hair still, yellow eyes steady. Zento stood behind him this time, one hand on the boy's shoulder. "He is too high in you," Zento said. "You put him at the mouth of the shaft. Push him to the floor." "He'll drown." "He is the floor. He does not drown. You are the one standing on him wrong." Zeph looked at the boy. The boy nodded once. Zeph reached in the doorway and set both hands under the boy's arms. He lowered him down the shaft, past the seam, past the layer built from Keji and the tiger, past his own resolve to walk toward the drum. He set him on the raw stone at the bottom. The boy folded his legs and put his palms flat on the rock. The rock lit under them. The shaft stopped shuddering. The fifth name settled onto the boy's back like a house onto its foundation. Zeph felt the crack in the wall close from the inside. "Name it," Zento said. "He carries what I can't," Zeph said. "I stand on what he carries." The doorway shut. Zeph opened his eyes. The first shields came over the ridge. He rose. The gold ran up his arms clean. He drew a thicker line from the boy this time, twice what he had risked before. The white core widened without burning. His chest held. The candle stayed lit. He crossed the field in three steps. Stillness of the hand took the first shield. Refusal of the ending took the second rank. Return of the step brought him back to Kaine before the heavy figure behind the ranks had raised his weapon. That figure looked at the broken shields, dropped his hammer in the grass, and walked backward into the trees. Kaine watched them go. "The vessel held." "It's set now," Zeph said. "Not sealed. Set." A horn answered from further east. Deeper than the drum. Older. Kaine's jaw tightened. "That one isn't Windchill."
