Chapter 46

The deeper horn rolled over the field a second time. Zeph felt it in his teeth. The sound sat wrong against the drum he already knew. Slower. Older. Kaine stepped closer, blade still drawn. "I don't know that call," Kaine said. "If you push the boy too hard against the wrong shape, he'll crack. Then the shaft goes with him." Zeph pressed the bracelet to his sternum. The sacred markings warmed under his thumb. "Then I ask before I pull." He knelt in the wet grass and opened the doorway. The small room came up around him. The boy sat at the base of the shaft, palms flat on the raw stone, gold hair still, yellow eyes lifted. Zento stood behind him, one hand on the boy's shoulder. "You heard it," Zeph said. "I heard it," Zento said. "What is it?" "Not Windchill. Not a hunter I have a name for." Zento's white eyes did not move. "If you draw from the boy blind, you shape him against a wall you cannot see. He will split." "Then tell me how to see it." "Listen without pulling. Set your hand on him. Do not draw." Zeph knelt beside the boy and put one hand flat between his shoulder blades. The stone under the boy's palms hummed. Zeph held still. He did not reach for gold. He let the horn come to him through the floor. The sound arrived in the shaft as a shape. Not the square weight of Windchill's ranks. Something long and low, moving in one line, one carrier. One thing. Not an army. Bigger than a man. The boy's palms grew warm under the rock. He looked up at Zeph and nodded, small. "One," Zeph said. "It's one. Heavy. Not human." "Then you do not spend him on ranks," Zento said. "You hold. You draw thin. You wait for the shape to show its face before you name what you refuse." Zeph opened his eyes. The field was empty. The trees at the east edge held still in a way trees do not hold. "One target," he told Kaine. "Big. Coming alone." Kaine's jaw eased half a notch. "Then we don't waste the vessel on the grass." He sheathed the blade. "Draw thin. Keep the boy low. Whatever walks out of those trees, let it show itself before you spend anything." Zeph drew a hair-thin line from the boy at the base of the shaft. The gold came up his arms as a whisper, not a flame. The candle in his chest stayed small. His hands did not shake. The eastern tree line cracked once, high up, where no branch should have moved. Zeph set his feet. He did not name anything yet. "Show me," he said, low, to whatever was walking out.
