Chapter 47

The tree line cracked again, lower down. Something heavy shouldered a pine aside without breaking it. Zeph kept the draw thin. The candle in his chest held steady. Kaine stepped a half pace behind him, blade back in hand. "Wait for the face," Kaine said. "You pull blind, the boy splits." The thing walked out. It stood two heads taller than a man, hunched, wrapped in dark hide that did not sit right on the bones under it. Long arms. No weapon. Its eyes caught the low sun and threw it back flat. Zeph did not know what it was. He had no name to refuse against it. That was the problem sitting in his throat. The fifth name held him up only because he had rooted it in things he understood. If he drew hard into a shape he could not read, the root would twist and the seam would snap. He knelt without dropping his eyes off the creature. He set two fingers on the bracelet at his wrist. The sacred markings warmed. He opened the door a hand's width and no more. Inside the shaft, the boy sat at the base with his palms on the stone. Gold hair still. Yellow eyes lifted. Zento stood behind him, white eyes fixed on the door. "I can't name it," Zeph said. "I don't know what it is." "Then do not name it," Zento said. "Name yourself. Draw only what your own ground can hold. Let it come to you. Read it moving." The boy nodded, small. His palms glowed under the rock, thin. Zeph opened his eyes. The creature had closed half the distance. It moved wrong — too quiet for its weight. "I keep going," Zeph said, under his breath. His own root. His own seam. The gold ran up his arms as a whisper, not a flame. The creature lunged. Zeph did not draw more. He stepped sideways on the thin power he already had and let the long arm pass. It carved a gouge into the wet grass where he had stood. He read the swing on its way through — the shoulder, the hip, the drag of the trailing foot. A weight pattern. Not a name, but a shape he could hold against. "Return of the step," he said. The old name caught. He came in under the second swing and drove his palm up into the ribs. The creature folded once, coughed something black, and went down on one knee. It did not die. It looked at him with those flat eyes and pulled itself up again. Kaine moved in at his shoulder. "You held the boy." "I held him," Zeph said. The candle was steady. The seam had not cracked. The creature straightened to full height. Behind it, at the tree line, a second shape stepped out of the pines.
