Chapter 57

Kiersten had called his change "new" and left before dark. Eduardo held that word for three days. New was not trusted. New was a thing you watched to see if it lasted. He had no way to prove it would. A day of soup meant nothing against eight years of harm. He could not sign for himself. He could only keep his hands moving and wait. He worked. He split wood for the widow he had promised. He hauled flour at the feast hall. Each night he wrote the day in his ledger and marked no rule broken. He did not drive to Kiersten's school. He did not send word. The old want to reach for her stayed quiet, and he let it stay. On the fourth morning she came back. He heard her boots on the step before he saw her. She stood in the doorway, arms crossed, tattoos dark against her skin. She did not sit. "I told people never to trust you fast," she said. "I told myself that too." "You were right to," Eduardo said. She looked at the plain room. The blankets. The cold stove he had not lit for show. "I went home and thought a long time," she said. "About the wood you left. About the note you didn't leave." Eduardo waited. He did not fill the silence. "I can't know if it holds," she said. "Neither can you." "No," he said. "So I'm not going to wait to find out from far away." She uncrossed her arms. "I'm going to watch it up close. Small things. Over time. Like I asked you for once." Eduardo's throat tightened. Years ago she had asked for exactly this, and he had called it punishment and walked out. "You asked me that at the stone house," he said. "I said no." "You did." Her voice stayed level. "I'm asking one more time. Not to be together. To be near enough to see." "Then see everything," Eduardo said. "The ledger. The days I want to run. All of it." She nodded once. She crossed to the shelf and picked up his ledger. She read a page. She read another. She did not soften. She set it down open. "I'll come Fridays," she said. "I'll read the week. If you lie in it, I'll know. I always did." "I won't," he said. "We'll see." She went to the door. She stopped there. "This isn't forgiveness. It's a chance to earn it. Don't spend it like you used to spend everything." "I won't," Eduardo said again. She left. This time she looked back once from the yard. Then she walked toward the road. Eduardo stood by the cold stove. The word "new" had become a test with a witness. She would come every Friday. His change no longer had to hold in the dark alone. It had to hold where she could see it.
