Chapter 58

Friday was two days off. Kiersten would read the week's ledger and know if he had lied. Eduardo trusted his week. He had marked no rule broken and meant it. But that night he pulled the second ledger from the back of the shelf, the old one. In it he had written his rawest confessions of what he had done to her. Not the debts. The cruelty. He had never let anyone read those pages. They were the worst of him, plain and unsoftened. He held both books at the table. The clean week and the dark past. He could give her the week and leave the old ledger hidden. She would never ask for it. She did not know it existed. But hiding it would prove nothing changed. The old Eduardo hid his worst self behind a clean face. He handed people the good page and buried the rest. If he did that now, the week meant nothing. She would be reading a lie made of true entries. He carried both books to the shelf and set them side by side, open. Then he waited. She came Friday at dusk. She wiped her boots on the step and came in without a knock. She crossed to the shelf and lifted the week's ledger. She read a page. Then another. She did not soften. Then she saw the second book beside it, open. She looked at the top line. "This one's older," she said. "It is." "You want me to read it." "I don't want you to," Eduardo said. "But you should. It's the worst of what I did to you. I wrote it plain. I never showed it to anyone." She set the week's book down. She picked up the old one. She stood there and read. Her face stayed level, but he watched her jaw tighten at one line. She turned a page. She turned another. The room was quiet except for paper. Eduardo did not fill the silence. He had learned that. He let her read the whole of it. She reached the last page. She closed the book slow. She held it against her chest a moment. Then she looked at him. "You could have hidden this," she said. "Yes." "The old you would have." "I know." She set the book back on the shelf, open, where it had been. "I felt it before I read it," she said. "I always feel endings. This didn't feel like one." She crossed her arms. "That's new too." Eduardo's throat tightened. "So you'll keep coming." "Fridays," she said. "Both books now. The clean one and this one. You don't get to keep a dark shelf anymore." "I won't." She went to the door. She stopped. "I read your worst," she said. "And I'm still here Friday. Don't waste that." She left. Eduardo stood by the shelf. His worst self was no longer hidden. She had seen all of it and had not walked for good. The door she had closed years ago stood open a crack, and this time he had not pried it. He had earned it.
