Chapter 59

Kiersten had said she would come Fridays. Now Eduardo faced a harder thing. He had ten winter debts still owed to the townspeople. Each one was a promise paid for in advance last fall. His deed had depended on those promises. His word depended on them now. Kiersten wanted to see him Wednesday to walk his land. If he stopped a job to meet her, the promise would break. And a broken promise would undo everything the town had signed for. He pulled the schedule from the wall. Quantum had helped him order it by urgency. Wednesday he owed Gwen a full day. She needed her winter stores hauled and her woodpile stacked before the first hard frost. He stood there with the paper. The old Eduardo would have chosen the woman and lied to the rest. He drove to the feast hall before dawn. Gwen was already at her stove. She did not look up. "You came," she said. "I promised Wednesday." "Kiersten wants you today." Gwen wiped her hands flat on her apron. "Word travels." "She does." Eduardo set his cap on the bench. "I'm here anyway." Gwen studied him a moment. Then she pointed at the flour sacks by the door. Eduardo worked. He hauled the sacks and stacked the wood and scrubbed the pots until his hands ached. Emilio came in around midday, dragging his stool. He set it near the door and sat. "You skipped her," Emilio said. "I kept the promise." Emilio thought about that. "That's the same thing." He did not explain. He watched Eduardo work. By dusk the stores were in and the pile was stacked. Gwen looked it over and nodded once. "Done right," she said. "I'll sign your book." When Eduardo drove home, Mother Angel stood at his gate. Her hair caught the last light. She had never come to his house before. "Kiersten waited at your porch this afternoon," she said kindly. "You weren't here." Eduardo's stomach dropped. "I was at Gwen's. I owed her the day." "I know." Mother Angel smiled. "She waited an hour. Then she asked me why you didn't come. I told her the truth. You had a debt and you kept it." "And?" "She left a note on your step." Mother Angel touched his arm and walked on. The note was pinned under a stone. Eduardo read it by the door. You chose the promise over me. The old you would have chosen me and broken the town's word. This is what I needed to see. I'll come Friday. And I'll come the Wednesday after, when you're free. Eduardo held the paper. He had kept his word and not lost her. For the first time both things stood together. The town's trust held. So did she. He nailed the schedule back on the wall and marked the day complete.
