Chapter 64

That Friday, after Kiersten took her ledger and left, Eduardo lay awake a long time. He had handed her the last hidden thing. Now his hands were empty and his chest was quiet. He had not felt quiet in years. He shut his eyes and, for the first time he could remember, he fell asleep without fighting for it. He dreamed. But the dream did not save him. It showed him the truth. He saw Kiersten as she had been at the end. She sat in a car that soon would not be hers. Her hands shook. She had just had surgery, and she was tired in a way sleep could not fix. Bills sat on her lap. His bills. The money he lost at cards. The money she had put into him, again and again, because she believed there was a man worth the gamble. In the dream she cried, and he watched himself do nothing. The dream moved on. He saw her cleaning up his mess, one more time, quiet and steady. He saw her hold a mirror to his face. She was not trying to shame him. She was trying to make him see what he could be. He had called it nagging. He had called her cruel. In the dream he finally understood. She had been trying to save him. Then he saw her choose. She set the mirror down. She turned away. Not to punish him. To save herself, because he had left her no other door. In the dream her back looked like an angel leaving a room too small to hold her. Eduardo woke before dawn with wet eyes. He did not run from the dream. He sat with it. The old Eduardo would have twisted it into pity for himself. This one did not. He saw plainly what he had cost her. The debt. The car. The stress on a body still healing. Every dollar he threw away that she had scraped together for his sake. He rose and lit the lamp in his mended house. Once it had been a broken home, roof sagging, windows shattered, walls cracked. He had made it stand again. But standing was not the same as clean. He opened the dark ledger, the one she read now too. He wrote what the dream had shown him, plainly. What her leaving had really cost her body and her purse. He did not write it to be forgiven. He wrote it so she would never again carry his story alone. When Friday came, Kiersten sat on the step and read the new page. Her steady face did not change for a long moment. "You finally see what it took from me," she said. "Not what it took from you." "I do," Eduardo said. "I'm sorry it took me this long." She closed the book slowly. "That's the first time you owed me the whole bill," she said. "And didn't ask me to pay any of it." She stayed on the step until the sun was gone.
