Chapter 65

Since Kiersten first sat on his step, Eduardo had felt the pull to give her all his days. But ten winter debts still waited in his book. Each was a promise he had traded for advance pay, and each held his name up in front of the town. If reconciliation dragged him off his schedule, he broke the very word that rebuilt him. So he decided to clear the whole list in one hard day, and to give each person something real, not just labor. Before dawn he drove to the pale house with the cross. Mother Angel met him at the door, her curls bright in the lamplight. She had signed his ledger many times. She had told him once that only honest work would earn his name back. "I mean to finish all ten today," Eduardo said. "I need words from God before I start." She took his hands. "Then work with your whole heart," she said, her voice soft as water. "Give the person, not only the task. God does not count your hours. He counts what you leave behind in each house you enter." He carried those words to the bathhouse first. The keeper worked there alone. He had never met her. She drew warm water in a wide stone basin and dropped in dried flowers that smelled of the hills. "You're the man they talk about," she said. Short and flat. No warmth wasted. "Some good, some bad," Eduardo said. "You look like a man who never lets his shoulders down." She pointed at the water. "Get in. You can't give all day from an empty cup." He sank into the water. The heat pulled the tightness from his back. For the first time in weeks his hands stopped shaking with hurry. Mirelle sat nearby, saying nothing, watching the steam rise. "My grandmother drew me a bath like this once," she said. "I slept a whole night after a year of sickness. Water knows more than we do." When he rose he felt clean in a way soap had never given him. Then he worked. He split wood for the widow and stayed to hear how her husband died. He patched a roof and shared his own bread with the old man beneath it. He hauled feed, mended a gate, dug a trench, cleared a chimney. At each house he set down his tools long enough to look the person in the eye and thank them for trusting his word. By dark the last name was crossed off. Ten debts, all paid. His book was clean. He drove home under a full sky. His debts to the town were done. But his hands stayed open, and for the first time he was free to give them fully to Kiersten. The old fear whispered that free hands could return to their old habits. Eduardo drove past it and kept going.
