Chapter 68

Wednesday sat two days off. Eduardo had the picnic to plan and no idea how. He walked out to his sagging porch and sat on the top step. He tried to think of what she liked. Nothing came. In all their years, he had never planned a single thing for her. He had never packed a lunch, never picked a spot, never made her feel like the center of anything. That truth landed hard. He remembered her voice from long ago. "Look at what I've done for you," she used to say. He had heard it as a threat, a debt held over his head. He had scoffed and told her to stop keeping score. He had made her feel like too much for wanting him back. He saw it plain now, sitting on the broken steps. She had never wanted his money. She had wanted his effort. She had wanted him to choose her without being asked. She had wanted something from his heart, and he had never once given it. Eduardo stood. He would not fix this with a grand plan. That was the old trap. But he could do one small true thing. He could make the picnic himself, with his own hands, the way she had always made things for him. He worked all afternoon. He baked bread in his father's oven. He cut apples. He wrapped cheese in cloth. He did not buy anything he could make. Each step, he thought of her instead of himself. Wednesday, Kiersten came to his house with a full basket, ready to bring the food like she'd said. She stopped when she saw his own basket by the door. "You made food," she said. "I did." Eduardo held up the loaf. "You said you'd bring it. I know. But I never once packed a meal for you. Not in all those years." She looked at the bread. Then at him. She read his face the way she read weather. "You used to say I kept score," she said. "You weren't keeping score. You were asking me to show up." His voice stayed level. "I made you feel like too much for wanting that. I was wrong." Kiersten set her basket down slow. Her shoulders dropped. For a long moment she said nothing. "That's the first time," she said. "You did something before I asked." "I should have done it a hundred times." "You didn't." She picked up his loaf and smelled it. "But you did today." They carried both baskets to the truck. She let him load hers beside his. On the drive, she named the open field she wanted, and he did not argue or steer. Something between them had shifted. He had given from his heart, not to win her, but because she deserved it. Kiersten had felt it. The picnic was no longer a test of whether she could like him. It was the first thing he had ever made for her.
