Chapter 69

They reached the open field near noon. Eduardo spread the blanket she had brought, an old cloth stitched with faded flowers. A thank-you card sat tucked in the corner of her basket. He set both baskets down and sat. Then he did not know what to do with his hands. Kiersten laid out the bread and the cheese. She poured water into two cups. She sat across from him and looked at the grass, the sky, the far line of trees. She was resting. He could see it. Eduardo felt the old itch rise. The silence pressed on him. He wanted to fill it. He wanted to point out the bread he baked, the apples he cut, how far he had come. He wanted to earn this moment. His whole life he had turned quiet into a stage. He opened his mouth to speak. Then he remembered what she asked for. No fixing. No proving. Just the two of them. If he filled this with himself, he would take the one thing she wanted. He closed his mouth. He looked at the field instead. It was hard. His heart beat fast, like he was doing something wrong by doing nothing. Kiersten broke a piece of bread. She chewed slow. Minutes passed. He said nothing. She said nothing. The wind moved the grass. "You're quiet," she said. "I am." "You used to fill every gap." She kept her eyes on the trees. "Talk over me. Make it about you." "I know." He kept his voice low. "I wanted to. Just now. I stopped." She turned and looked at him. She read his face the way she always had. Then she set the bread down. "Can I tell you something?" she said. "Yes." She was quiet a long time. He did not push. He waited. "When I lived with you, I stopped talking," she said. "Every time I said how I felt, you made it a fight. So I learned to hold it in. For years." Her voice stayed steady. "I forgot what my own feelings sounded like." The old Eduardo would have argued. He would have said he never meant it, that she made it worse. He felt those words rise. He let them fall. "I did that," he said. "I made you carry it alone." "Yes." She looked down at her hands, at the tattoos winding up her wrists. "I'm telling you now because I want to. Not because I have to." "I'm listening." And he did. She spoke about the small silences, the nights she cried where he could not see. He did not fix. He did not defend. He held each thing she gave him and set nothing back on her. When she finished, she let out a long breath. Her shoulders dropped. "That's the first time you ever heard me," she said. Eduardo nodded. He had not filled the moment. He had not ruined it. He had simply stayed. And she had opened, because at last there was room.
