Chapter 70

The picnic ended two days ago. Kiersten had opened to him at last. But driving home, a fear rose in Eduardo. She had heard him once. One good day proved nothing. His whole life was a string of good days followed by broken ones. He needed to show her he could hold this, not just for a picnic, but every day. He did not know how a man proved that. So he went looking for people who might. He found the elders at the town witch's home. Herbs hung drying from the beams. Jars lined the shelves, each one strange and glowing faint. Quantum sat cross-legged near the hearth, glasses catching the firelight. Mother Angel stood by the window, her wings folded soft. Ananda turned a small crystal in their fingers. The Wise One waited in the corner, still as the wall behind her. These were the ones who had watched Eduardo climb out of himself over a year of hard work. "I want to show Kiersten I'm consistent," Eduardo said. "That I won't slip back. How do I prove that to her?" Ananda held up the crystal. "You can't hand someone proof. Trust me, I've tried. Rocks don't sign contracts." Quantum spoke slow and deep. "Consistency is not a thing you show once. It is the same act, repeated, when no one watches and nothing is gained. You cannot prove it in a day. Only across days." Eduardo's chest tightened. "Then there's no way to show her now." "No," the Wise One said. "That's the point." Mother Angel crossed to him. Her voice was gentle. "You keep trying to give her a reason to believe. But belief is hers to build, not yours to hand over. Your part is to do the small thing again tomorrow. And the day after. Without asking her to notice." Eduardo sat with that. It was the answer he did not want. Every plan in him wanted a gesture, a moment, a way to settle it fast. He knew that hunger now. It was the old ego, dressed as love. "So I stop trying to show her," he said. "You stop performing it," Quantum said. "You just live it. Consistency isn't a message you send. It's who you are when the sending stops." Ananda grinned. "Boring, right? Real change is boring. That's how you know it's real." Eduardo let out a breath. The pressure in him loosened. He had come wanting a way to prove himself and found there was none. There was only the quiet work, done and done again, for its own sake. He stood. "Then I'll go home and split the wood I split yesterday. And tomorrow I'll split it again." The Wise One nodded once. "Now you understand." Eduardo walked out into the evening. The need to prove had left him. What remained was simpler, and harder. He would not show Kiersten he was steady. He would just be steady, whether she ever looked or not.
