Chapter 71

Eduardo split the wood again at dawn, just as he'd promised. But when he carried an armload inside, the house felt wrong. Kiersten was coming Friday. He looked around and saw only his own life. His father's rules were in the walls. His own confessions sat on the shelf. Every board he'd nailed held a memory that was his alone. Nothing here said Kiersten belonged. He didn't know how to make a place feel like hers. He sat on the porch and remembered the house before he'd fixed it. The battered thing with the sagging roof and broken windows. He'd cleared out old photographs the day he returned. Now he wished he'd kept something warm to pass on. But his childhood had no warm ritual. No shared meal that meant welcome. His parents never made a place feel safe. So he had nothing to copy. Then the real question came, the one he'd been circling for a year. Why had he done it? Why had he called Kiersten a liar and rolled over when she cried? He sat with it honestly this time. He'd been afraid. Afraid that if he needed her, she could leave him like his mother left rooms without a word. So he hurt her first. He made her small so she couldn't make him small. That was the underlying wound. Fear of love, dressed up as anger. He understood now why it took so long. He'd needed to lose everything before he'd stop performing. A warm home wasn't a thing you inherited. It was a thing you built with someone, on purpose, out of nothing. So Eduardo decided to make a ritual, not copy one. Something small and repeatable. Something that said, you have a place here. He went inside and cleared one shelf. He set two cups on it, side by side. Not one for himself. Two. Then he found paper and wrote a single line: "Whatever you feel, you can say it here, and I won't turn it into a fight." He nailed the paper to the wall by the door, where anyone entering would see it. It was a promise, not a decoration. He made no grand plan for Friday. He'd pour tea into both cups. He'd let her speak first. He'd do it again the next Friday, and the one after, whether she stayed or not. When Friday came, Kiersten stepped inside and stopped. She read the paper by the door. She looked at the two cups on the shelf. She said nothing for a long moment. "You made a place for me," she said. It wasn't a question. "I made a promise," Eduardo said. "The cup stays whether you drink from it or not." Kiersten crossed the room and picked up the second cup. She held it in both hands. For the first time, she looked at his house not as his, but as somewhere she might stay.
