Chapter 72

Kiersten held the second cup for a while. Then she set it down and looked at Eduardo. He waited for her to say the house felt like hers now. She didn't. She walked the rooms slowly. She touched the wall by the door. She looked at the shelf, the ledgers, the boards he'd nailed. When she came back, her face had changed. "Why did I have to explain myself over and over?" she asked. "Every time you hurt me, you turned it back on me. I proved I was loyal. You made me prove it again." Eduardo felt the old pull. The urge to say she was twisting it. He breathed and let the urge pass. "I know I did that," he said. "You always knew," Kiersten said. Her voice stayed flat. "I told you about the cycle. You were stuck in it. I tried to show you who you were becoming. You wouldn't hear it. You called it a knife when it was a mirror." He wanted to defend the house. To say, look, I made a place for you. But that was the same move. Making it about what he'd built. Making her prove she saw it. The old wound sat plain in front of him. He had learned to fix walls. He had never learned what a shared home looked like, so this stayed his, not theirs. "You're right," he said. "I did all of it. You woke me up and I punished you for it." Kiersten waited. She was testing whether he'd circle back to himself. He didn't. He said nothing more. He let her words stand without adding his own. She crossed to the shelf. She picked up the second cup again. "Two cups don't make it mine," she said. "A promise on the wall doesn't make it mine." She held the cup out to him. "I make it mine. If I choose to." Eduardo understood. He had been trying to hand her a home like a gift. A home wasn't given. It was taken up, or it wasn't. He couldn't build it for her. He could only leave the door open and stop steering. "Then it's yours to take or leave," he said. "I won't push it on you. I won't make you earn it." Kiersten studied him. For the first time, he saw her set something down. The habit of bracing for the turn. She filled the cup from the pot. She filled his too. She set both on the shelf side by side. "Not today," she said. "But the cups stay. And I decide when." She left before dusk. The two cups sat full on the shelf. Eduardo didn't touch them. The house was no longer only his. It wasn't hers yet either. It waited between them now, hers to claim, on her time, not his.
