Chapter 74

Two days after Kiersten drank from the cup, a woman stopped Eduardo at the feed store. She was gray at the temples and carried a full basket. He knew her face from the road near his house. She had watched his porch meetings from her own yard. "I've seen you two out there," she said. "I knew you before the house got painted. A man doesn't change that fast." She looked at him hard. "That girl seems kind. I'd hate to see her walk into an old story wearing new paint." Eduardo felt the heat rise in his chest. The old urge came, to argue, to prove her wrong, to make her the fool. He set it down. But her words stayed in him all afternoon. If she doubted him, she might say it to Kiersten. One quiet warning could pull Kiersten back through the door she was slowly opening. Eduardo did not know how to answer a doubt he had earned. He drove to the timeworn cottage on the edge of town. Stars and moons were carved into its wood. Inside lived the Wise One, the elder people came to when they could not think straight. She read what she called the field. She had never lied to soften a thing. Eduardo had sat before her once and left with the truth he was avoiding. She opened the door before he knocked. "You brought a hollow with you," she said. She waved him to a stool. "Sit. Say it plain." "A woman thinks I'm still the man I was," Eduardo said. "She might tell Kiersten. I could lose everything I built." The Wise One folded her hands. "She's right," she said. Eduardo flinched. "You were that man. Denying it makes her more sure." "Then how do I stop her?" "You don't." She let the words sit. "You can't argue a person out of what they saw. You can only give them something new to see." She leaned closer. "Don't defend yourself to Kiersten. Don't chase the woman. Let the doubt stand next to your work. Time decides which one people trust." Eduardo nodded slowly. "So I do nothing." "You do the same thing you've been doing," she said. "In front of her eyes. A bell that stopped ringing stays quiet. But a man can ring a new one every day." Eduardo drove home lighter. That Friday, Kiersten came to read the ledgers. He told her about the woman himself, plain, before anyone else could. "She thinks I haven't changed," he said. "She might be watching. I'm not going to argue with her. I just wanted you to hear it from me first." Kiersten studied him a long moment. Then she picked up the second cup, the full one, and drank. She set it down empty. "You would've hidden that before," she said. "Let her watch." She opened the ledger. Both cups stood empty now on the shelf.
