Chapter 75

Kiersten had drunk from the cup, but she still would not call the house hers. Eduardo noticed it on Friday. She sat, read the ledgers, then left without touching the shelf where the two empty cups stood. He had run out of things to build. The steps were fixed. The roof held. He did not know what daily proof would finally make the house feel like her home. So he went looking for an answer inside himself instead. He drove first to the tarot reader. Fortune waited outside, the wheel on its face turned mid-spin. Its legs pointed toward Eduardo without choosing. "You want to know what to hand her," Fortune said. "I want her to feel it's hers," Eduardo said. "Not a gift. Hers." Fortune drew one card and laid it in the dirt. "A man plants a tree for a woman. She waters it herself. Then it is hers." The wheel clicked forward. "You keep planting and pouring both. Leave her the water." Eduardo sat with that. He had done everything alone. He had never left a space for her to fill. He drove next to the dream analyst's cottage. Moons were carved above the door. Dreamer opened it before he spoke. Her dark hair held small stars. She listened for who a story left out. "I keep dreaming the same house," Eduardo said. "Two cups on a shelf. I fill both every morning. She drinks one. The other I pour out at night, still full." Dreamer studied him. "Who fills the second cup in the dream?" "I do." "That's the whole thing." Her voice went quieter. "You fill her cup so she owes you nothing. A home isn't a place where nothing is asked of you. It's a place where someone lets you carry part of it." She did not soften it. "Stop pouring her cup. Leave it empty. Let her decide to fill it." Eduardo drove home in the dark. The words from both stayed together in his chest. He had built the house to give her everything. That was the old want wearing new paint. He had never once let her give back. The next morning he filled his own cup only. He set the second one empty on the shelf, right side up, waiting. He wrote on the wall below it: This cup is yours to fill or leave. I won't touch it. Friday came. Kiersten read the ledgers. Then she saw the empty cup and the new line. She went still. She looked at it a long time. She rose, went to the kettle, and poured. She set the full cup on the shelf beside his. "Now there's something of mine here," she said. She looked around the room like she was seeing it new. "I'll bring my own kettle next week." Eduardo did not fill it for her. He let it stand. For the first time the house held one thing that was hers, placed by her hand.
