Chapter 83

Eduardo had learned to walk off the fear. But a new weight landed on a Sunday. He and Kiersten climbed the steps of the town church together, same as every week. A neighbor stood near the doors, a man Eduardo barely knew. The man spoke loud enough for half the yard to hear. "So she lives with you now," he said. "Didn't take long. Same as always, I bet." A few heads turned. Eduardo felt the old heat rise in his chest. The old Eduardo would have swung or lied. He breathed. He looked at Kiersten. Her face stayed flat, but he saw her jaw tighten. The rumor was already moving. He could feel it spread through the quiet yard like water on dry wood. Inside, the colored windows threw patterns across the stone floor. Father waited near the front. Eduardo did not sit. He walked straight to the priest and told him what the neighbor had said. Father listened. He did not soften it. "You want to defend yourself," he said. "Don't. A man who explains looks like he has something to hide." "Then what?" Eduardo asked. "Tell the truth plainly. Once. Then let it stand." Eduardo turned to the room. People had filed into the pews. He did not climb anything or raise his hands. He just spoke where he stood. "Kiersten lives in my house," he said. "She chose it. We come here every Sunday because we decided to. That's all it is." He looked at the neighbor. "You can watch us as long as you want. We'll keep showing up." The neighbor shifted in his seat and said nothing. Kiersten walked up beside Eduardo. She did not take his hand. She looked at the man who had spoken. "He's not who he was," she said. "I'd know. I feel endings before they come. This isn't one." Two plain sentences. She stopped. The room went still. After the service, people filed out slow. A few nodded at Eduardo as they passed. The neighbor left without looking at either of them. Eduardo stood on the steps and felt something settle. The rumor had not grown. It had met the truth and died there in the open. Father came out last. "You didn't argue," he said. "Good. Argument feeds the fire. Truth starves it." Eduardo put his cap back on. "It cost me nothing," he said. "I just said what was." Kiersten waited at the bottom of the steps. For the first time, she had spoken for him in front of the town, not behind a closed door. On the drive home she was quiet. Then she said, "They'll keep watching." "Let them," Eduardo said. She nodded. "Good." She looked out the window. "Now they know I chose it. Not you." That was new. The town had seen her claim him by choice. The old shame had no room left to grow.
