Chapter 33

At noon Elsa sent Dahlia home early and told Bodhi to stay at the schoolhouse until dark. The lesson could wait one day. She had a debt to close, and she wanted the boy to see the closing done properly, so he would understand what a mark in the ledger cost. She walked to the granite fortress with the iron-banded shutters and stopped at the red door. She carried the sapphire stake under her coat. She spoke the words into the stone and waited. The creature came up through the floor of the front room. Tall. Horned. Green eyes bright as lamp glass in the dim. Blood dried on the tips of its horns. It smiled at her the way a wolf smiles at a lame sheep. "You owe me," it said. "I'm paying," Elsa said. She set the stake on the sill between them, blue jewels catching what light there was. "Two lives. Adults. My choice, my hand in the ledger. In exchange, you take Bodhi's name off your books and the boy is closed to you forever. His guardians too. Fern. Clara. Jasper. Nora. Dahlia. All of them. No marks. No leverage. No visits." The creature's smile thinned. "Two is cheap for so many." "Two is what I'm offering. The stake stays with Fern until you agree." It looked at the jewels a long time. Then it dipped its horns. "Two. Names by the next moon. After that, the boy and his people are outside my reach. But the debt on you remains, elder. You I keep." "I know," Elsa said. She walked back through the frost to the schoolhouse and brought Bodhi to the driftwood hut. Nora was already there with the ledger open on the table. "Come here," Elsa said. Bodhi came. She put her hand over his on the chalk stub. "Two names today. Adults. I choose them. You watch me choose. You watch Nora mark them." She said the first name. A man from the outer farms who beat his wife and had already put two children in the ground. She said the second. A trapper who had followed the Peters girl home twice last month. Nora wrote each name in her careful hand. Elsa took the pen and drew the cross herself, once, then again. The ink sat wet on the paper. Bodhi did not speak. His chalk hand had gone still. "Look at me," Elsa said. He looked. "These two breathe tonight. Tomorrow they don't. Because I chose. Not the wall. Not the creature. Me. When it's your hand on the pen, it will be you. Do you understand what that weighs." "Yes," he said. His voice was small and honest. "Say the weight back to me." "A person for a person," he said. "And I have to know why." Elsa closed the ledger. The boy's face had changed. She had spent two lives to buy him from the creature, and she had spent them in front of him so he would never spend one lightly.
