Chapter 34

The morning after the two crosses, Elsa walked to the driftwood hut before dawn. Nora was awake, sitting at the table in her yellow slicker, the ledger open in front of her. Her death date was written on the page for tomorrow. Elsa sat across from her and set the teal journal down between them. "You never wrote the old marks down," Elsa said. "The ones your mother taught you. The hooks. The half-circles. The one that means a debt walks with the name." Nora put her hand flat on the page. "I know them by feel. I never needed the shape on paper." "Bodhi will need the shape on paper. I can read the crosses and the circles. Dahlia can read those too. Neither of us knows the older ones. When you're gone tomorrow, he inherits a book he can't finish reading." Nora looked at the ledger a long time. "There are nineteen marks I never taught anyone." "Then teach them today." Elsa sent for Bodhi and Dahlia. They came through the low door together, Dahlia in her hooded coat, the boy with his chalk stub already in his fist. Dahlia stopped when she saw the ledger open. She had never been allowed to touch it before. "Sit," Elsa said. "Both of you. Nora is going to draw every mark she knows. You are both going to copy each one until your hands remember. Dahlia will hold the key after. Bodhi will learn from her." Dahlia's jaw tightened. Elsa watched her hands. The knuckles went white on the edge of the table, then loosened. "A ledger key," Dahlia said. "In writing. Same as the seat." "In writing," Elsa said. She opened the teal journal to a blank page and slid it toward Dahlia. "You draw them here as she names them. This book stays with Fern. You keep the copy you make today." Nora took the pen. She drew the first mark, a hook curled back on itself. "This one means the death is owed. Someone else's price paid on this name." She drew the next. "This means the name was written twice. Only the second one counts." Bodhi copied each shape onto his slate with the chalk. Dahlia copied into the journal in a careful, cramped hand. Nora went slow. She named each mark, then its use, then the mistake most likely to be made with it. Elsa watched Bodhi's face. He did not look afraid. He looked like a boy learning a trade. They worked past noon. Nora's hand shook near the end. On the nineteenth mark she set the pen down and pushed the journal toward Dahlia. "That's all of them," she said. Elsa closed the ledger. Dahlia held the teal journal against her chest with both hands. Bodhi's slate was full of shapes he could name. Nora would die tomorrow, and the book would still speak when she was gone.
