Chapter 52

Two days before the crowning, Elsa called the guardians to the driftwood hut. Fern came first, then Nancy, then Clara, then Jasper. Wren slipped in last and took the corner stool. Bodhi was at the schoolhouse with Dahlia, learning a new letter. Elsa had wanted this hour without him. She set the woven crown on the table between them. The vines were still green. The berries had not shrunk. In the low light the gold in it looked lit from inside. "The crown is ready," Elsa said. "But a crown alone won't hold the room. The mothers will see a boy in a chair with fruit on his head. I need something they know is mine. Something I hand him in front of them so they feel the weight move." Nancy leaned her elbows on the table. "You want a token. Not a gift. A seat." "A seat," Elsa said. Fern was already looking at the peg by the door. The peg was empty now, but for years it had held one thing. "The green cloak," Fern said. "The one you wore at every naming and every burial. The mothers have watched you walk in that cloak since they were girls. If he stands under it, they'll see you standing behind him." Elsa went to the chest under the window and lifted the cloak out. Forest green wool, heavy in her hands. Strawberries and blackberries stitched along the hem and the cuffs, faded but sound. She laid it beside the crown. The two pieces looked like they had been made for the same boy. "That's the token," Clara said. "No one will need it explained." Jasper nodded once. Wren did the same. Elsa smoothed the shoulder of the cloak. Then she said the harder thing. "When I'm gone, the hut goes to him too. Not just the crown and the cloak. This building. The table. The peg. Add it to the rite. After I go, the guardians bring him here and set his hand on the door. That's how the village sees the seat is his and not just the chair in the library." The room went quiet. Nancy's eyes did not leave her. "Five days," Nancy said. "Five days," Elsa said. Fern reached across and covered Elsa's hand with her own. She didn't argue. None of them did. Clara wrote it in the teal journal in her small even hand: crown, cloak, and after her death, the hut. Each guardian signed under it. Wren signed last. Elsa folded the cloak once and set it on top of the crown. The rite was full now. The mothers would have something to watch pass from her hands to his. Two days left before the library. Five before the seventh.
