Chapter 53

The morning after the guardians signed the rite, Elsa woke slow. Her hands shook when she lifted the kettle. She set it down again and sat on the edge of the cot. The cloak hung on its peg. The crown waited in the chest. She had one day before the library, and her body was leaving faster than she had counted on. She sent Wren to fetch Nancy Whitmore. No one else. She wanted the room quiet for what she had to say. Nancy came within the hour. White hair under a wool shawl, purple cardigan, the same warm look she gave every child at her shelves. She took one glance at Elsa on the cot and pulled a stool close without waiting to be asked. "You're worse today," Nancy said. "I am." Elsa did not soften it. "I won't hold the smile through the whole rite. If I stand up there and my knees go, or my mouth won't lift, the mothers will read it as the warmth breaking. They'll blame Bodhi before he wears the crown an hour." Nancy folded her hands. "Then don't stand alone." "That's why I sent for you." Elsa looked at her. "You already sit in my seat. The mothers trust you. The elders swallowed you. I want you beside me at the crowning, and I want you to speak the warmth into him if my voice goes." Nancy nodded once. "Yes." "There's more. We call a town meeting this afternoon. Before the ceremony. I stand up and tell them plainly I'm sick. That I'm fading. That the crowning goes forward with you beside me. If they hear it from my own mouth, they won't say later that Bodhi's rise hid a dying elder. The trust stays clean." Nancy studied her a long moment. "You're sure you can stand for the meeting?" "Once. For the meeting. I'll sit for the crowning tomorrow if I have to." "Then we do it," Nancy said. She rose and set water on for tea, moving through the hut like she already knew where every cup lived. By midafternoon the village filled the library. Warm wood, crystals humming pale blue along the shelves. Elsa walked in on Nancy's arm. She did not hide the lean. She stood at the front and told them she was ill, that her strength was going, that she had chosen Nancy to stand with her tomorrow and speak for her if needed. She named Bodhi again as her successor. She smiled the smile they knew, and she held it. The mothers did not murmur. Larissa Miller stepped forward first and laid a hand on Elsa's wrist. Charlie Morrison came next. Then three more. No one asked Elsa to step down early. No one questioned Bodhi. When Elsa sat, Nancy took the floor and told them the hour of the crowning. The room agreed with one voice. The trust held. The crowning would go forward. But Elsa felt her legs shake under the bench, and she knew she had spent something she could not get back.
