Chapter 19

The first named-plate night sold out in an hour. Lexi's beet dish went on the card under her name, in black ink, right below his. Then it did not stop at one night. People asked for her plates the other six nights too. Reviews used both names. And Lexi came in on a Tuesday and said she wanted to open her own store. Johnathon set down the pan. "Your own store." "A boutique. Mine." She pushed her glasses up. "Not managing someone else's. Not one plate a month. A place with my name on the door." He waited for the drop in his chest. It did not come. "Then do it." She found the space that week. A narrow shop with a pink front and tall display windows. She painted the sign herself, glossy pink letters, and stood back on the sidewalk to check them straight. He held the ladder. That was all she asked him to do. Hold the ladder, not the brush. Opening morning she cut the ribbon. The store filled by noon. She had stocked it in her colors, pink and white and black, the same shapes she drew on his plates. On the counter sat a cluster of tiger lilies, pink and black and white petals, spotted centers. She had picked them because they matched. "My colors," she said. "On my flowers. In my store." That night they closed both places and ate at the bistro pass. The grey cat wound the stool legs. Lexi laid her notebook flat between them. "Two stores now," she said. "Yours and mine. And a plate here with my name." She tapped the card. "I stopped fading." "You did." She was quiet, then plain. "I like it better than ever. Us. This." She did not add a flat finisher. She just let it stay. Johnathon looked at the two of them. Her boutique across the city, his purple dining room here, both full, both hers and his in the right measure. He had spent months afraid that sharing his kitchen would cost him something. Instead it had grown into two names, two places, one Monday still theirs. He pulled a clean plate and set it in front of her. "So. What do we cook for your grand opening dish?" Lexi opened the notebook to a fresh page. Her pencil moved. Pink swirl, white curl, black char line. Then she stopped. "You keep winning competitions," she said. "The country still doesn't know your name the way it should." "It will." "There's a bigger stage." She looked up. "A national showcase. Top chef. Real one." She slid the plate back to him. "You want top chef of the whole country. Not just a purple room downtown." He had said that goal out loud years ago, over cold soup, at fifteen. He had almost forgotten it inside the good months. "Then draw me the dish that gets me there," he said. Lexi turned the page. The blank plate waited. So did the country.
