Chapter 28

Monday came, and the bistro sat dark. The whole block still crowded Lexi's boutique two doors down. Johnathon met her at the competition hall for filming, but his mind stayed on the empty reservation book. Next week's episode had a theme: build a display that tells your story. Lexi already had hers sketched. She sat cross-legged on the studio floor, pencil moving fast. Johnathon leaned over her shoulder. She was drawing a dress form, then a rack, then flowers spilling from a vase beside it. Pink, black, and white tiger lilies with spotted centers. "That's the boutique," she said. "Same colors as your lemon dish. I'm putting it in the shop window." He stared at the flowers. Then something clicked. He didn't have to choose between the two places. He could hold both. "I'm building a food display," Johnathon said. "For the show. Not a plate. A whole table." Lexi looked up. "Explain." "The bistro and your shop. One display that honors both." He grabbed her pencil. On the corner of her page he drew a long table. "Your dress form here. My father's chicken plated here. The lemon pasta between them. And your flowers running down the middle, tying it together." His hand moved fast now. "Fashion and food on the same street. That's our story." Lexi went quiet, the soft kind. "You'd put my shop on your cooking show." "It's not just my show," he said. "It never was." He worked all week. He plated the chicken cold, then hot, testing which held under studio lights. He piped the lemon pasta into small glass cups so it read from a distance. Lexi lent him a dress form and pinned pink and white fabric to it. Stephanie sent over the exact flowers from the sketch, three clusters of the spotted lilies, wrapped and delivered before noon. "Lexi said you'd need them," the note read. "Don't kill them." Monday, filming day. Johnathon set the table under the lights. The dress form stood at one end. His father's chicken sat sliced and glossy. The lemon cups caught the glow. Down the center ran the tiger lilies, pink and black and white. The judges walked the length of it slowly. "This isn't a dish," one judge said. "It's a street. A restaurant and a shop, together." "That's the point," Johnathon said. The judges scored it first place for the episode. The cameras cut. Lexi crossed the floor and took his hand. But the producer wasn't smiling. He held up his phone. "That display just went viral," he said. "Both places. Everyone wants a table at the bistro and a dress from the shop. Same night." He looked at Johnathon. "You've got reservations booked solid through next month. Lexi's shop too. Can you two actually run both at once now?" Johnathon looked at Lexi. Neither of them had an answer yet.
