Chapter 29

The reservation book at the bistro was full for a month. Lexi's boutique had orders stacked past that. Johnathon stood in his kitchen the next morning, staring at both booking sheets side by side. He didn't know how they'd cook every plate and sew every order without dropping one. Lexi came in with two coffees. She set one down and read his face. "You're already behind in your head," she said. "Stop." "We can't be in two places every night," Johnathon said. "The bistro needs me. Your shop needs you." Lexi pulled a stool close. "Then we don't split up. We share." She slid her phone across the counter. On it was a plan she'd typed at four in the morning. "Stephanie runs the boutique floor. She's better at it than me anyway. I cook the credited dishes here on the busy nights. You handle the line." He scrolled. She had it mapped by day, hour by hour. "You'd leave your own shop?" "I'd trust my manager," Lexi said. "That's all I'm saying right now." They tested it that night. Stephanie took the boutique. The line ran long, but she moved customers through fast, calm at the register. Down the street, Johnathon plated chicken while Lexi finished the lemon pasta beside him. They didn't crash into each other. They found a rhythm. By closing, both places had cleared their bookings for the night. Nothing burned. No order got missed. After that, they ran everything without a single miss. The demand held for weeks and they met it. Word spread, and so did the display. A shop nearby, a fancy place that sold calm CBD drinks, printed shirts with Johnathon's food table on the front. Lexi liked the shirts. She stocked them at her boutique, folded on a table by the window with her flowers. "People are wearing your table," Lexi said one night, holding one up. The chicken, the lemon cups, the tiger lilies, all printed across the cotton. Johnathon laughed. "That's yours too. Your dress form's on there." "I know," she said, quieter now. "It's both of us. That's the point." The shirts sold out by Friday. The boutique reordered twice. For once, the bistro and the shop weren't fighting for the same night. They fed each other. Monday came again. Johnathon drove to the competition hall for filming, steady for the first time in weeks. His phone buzzed on the seat. It was the show's producer. "Big news," the producer said. "Your numbers are the highest we've had. The network wants to talk about the national final slot. Top chef of the country, live. They want you for the seat." Johnathon gripped the wheel. He'd wanted that title since he was nine on a step stool. "When," he said. "Soon," the producer said. "But this one's bigger than anything you've done. And they'll want you locked away for it." Johnathon looked at the empty passenger seat where Lexi usually sat.
