Chapter 13

The coins held two months now. The work table sat in the light, the sketch pinned to the wall by the door. That night Jeon-min blew out the lamp and did not reach for his thread. He reached for Kensei instead. "We have never done this here," Kensei said. His voice was low. The room was theirs. No sister to walk in. No hallway with a neighbor watching. No borrowed floor to clear by morning. Jeon-min pulled him down onto the mat. "Then we do it now." He said it the way he named a price to a stranger. Flat. Sure. He touched the tie at Kensei's collar, the hanbok he had measured with his own hands. Kensei laughed and let him. For years he had counted the cost of every touch. He counted nothing now. He kissed Jeon-min, and Jeon-min kissed him back, and neither of them stopped to listen for a knock. Something moved on the wall. Kensei turned his head. A small gecko clung to the wood, ears like a cat's, watching them with one bright eye. He froze. The old fear rose in him. Someone sees. Then he laughed again. "We have a witness." Jeon-min glanced up, saw the gecko, and did not move away. "Let it watch." He said it once, then said it again. "Let it watch. This is our house." The words landed harder than the touch. Their house. Not a hiding place. Not a room they paid for and feared. A place where a small thing could watch them love each other, and nothing would come of it. No decree. No ledger. No enforcer at the door. Kensei held Jeon-min close and let the night stretch long. They kissed. They talked in the dark about the fifth city, about the pattern, about the old man who turned his sash over twice. Kensei fell asleep with his face against Jeon-min's neck. For once he did not lie awake. He did not want to leave. He did not have to. Morning came gray through the lattice. Kensei woke first. Jeon-min slept beside him, his breath even, his hand still on Kensei's arm. The gecko was gone from the wall. Kensei looked at the sketch by the door. He looked at the coins stacked on the table. He had a place. He had a trade. He had this man asleep against him, and no law left standing to take him away. He knew then what was missing. They could stay here and hold what they had. Or they could go to the fifth city, where no one knew Kensei had ever been Hikari, where they could arrive as two men with a trade and a pattern, and build a name from nothing. Kensei woke him gently. "When do we leave?" Jeon-min opened his eyes. He did not ask what Kensei meant. "Soon," he said. "We pack this week."
