Chapter 14

They packed the coins and the sketch that week. But one thing stopped Kensei cold. He wanted to marry Jeon-min before they left. He had no name and no standing. No official would sign for a man the palace had erased. Without a paper, the marriage would feel like the storeroom again. A thing done in the dark, real to no one but them. He told Jeon-min while they folded thread into the bag. "I want it marked. Written down. So it counts." Jeon-min looked up. "You have no name for the clerk to write." "I know." Kensei set down the thread. "So I make one." He left before Jeon-min could argue. He went to the palace one last time. The guards knew his face and let him wait. His father the king came out into the hall, older than Kensei remembered, and did not sit. "I cannot give you your rank," the king said. "I told you that. The throne breaks if I favor you." "I don't want the rank." Kensei stood straight. "I want you to sign a name. Not the old one. A new one. Any clerk will honor a paper with your seal." The king was quiet. "A common name. Nothing that ties you to me." "Nothing," Kensei said. "Just a name that lets me marry him." The king went to a side table and took up brush and paper. He wrote a plain name, one no noble carried. He pressed his seal below it. Then he wrote a second line under the first. A marriage record, blank where the second name belonged. "Bring your man," the king said. "I will fill the rest myself. No clerk. No court. Me." Kensei brought Jeon-min back through the tall doors. Jeon-min looked at the gold walls and said nothing, but his hand found Kensei's and held it. The king dipped the brush. He wrote Jeon-min's name beside the new one Kensei had chosen. He wrote the date. He pressed the seal a second time. "It is done," the king said. He handed the paper to Kensei. "You are married. This holds in any city. No one can strike it." Kensei read the two names, side by side, under the royal seal. Not a secret. Not a thing hidden by morning. A record any official would honor. The king looked at them both. "Go build your life. Do not come back here." His voice was steady, but he turned away fast. Outside the palace, Kensei folded the paper into his shirt. Jeon-min touched the fold through the cloth. "Now it counts," Jeon-min said. "Now it counts," Kensei said. They walked back toward the guesthouse with its curved eaves and packed bags. The name on the paper was new. It tied to no father, no rank, no old life. They would carry it to the fifth city and make it mean something there.
