Chapter 2

Kensei woke in the servants' room to five other men snoring. He had traded his soft bed for this floor. He had Jeon-min now, but nowhere to hold him. They still met under the cherry tree at night, and the tree hid nothing. Yesterday a maid had watched them from the porch. Today the cook had smirked. A fallen Hikari courting a Hikui gave the whole guesthouse something to whisper about. Kensei needed a door that closed. He found Jeon-min sweeping the back rooms. "There's a place no one uses," Kensei said. "The old storeroom past the kitchen. Broken door, dust to the beams. If I fix it, we get walls." Jeon-min leaned on his broom. He wrote poems in his head while he worked, Kensei knew, lines he never dared say aloud to anyone but him. "The head servant guards those keys like gold," Jeon-min said. "She'll ask why a fallen lord wants a locked room." "Then I won't ask her." Kensei held up a bent nail. "I'll take it." He worked the storeroom that afternoon. He cleared crates. He swept years of grit into the yard. The door hung on one hinge, so he shaved the wood until it swung true. He found a small gecko on the wall, cat ears perched on its head, watching him with a blue eye. He let it stay. By dusk the room held two clean mats and a door that latched from inside. He brought Jeon-min at nightfall. The latch clicked shut. For the first time, no eyes could reach them. Jeon-min touched the mended door, then Kensei's face. "You made us a room," he said. He spoke a line of his own then, soft, a poem he had never risked before. Kensei held him and listened. The gecko blinked from the beam. No one watched but a lizard. The door opened without a knock. The head servant stood in it, keys in her fist. She looked at the two mats, the swept floor, the two men close. Her face did not soften. "This storeroom is guesthouse property," she said. "You broke a lock that isn't yours." She stepped back into the passage. "The master keeps a ledger of every crime his servants commit. A fallen son and his Hikui, hiding behind a stolen door. He will want to know." She turned toward the main house, keys swinging. Kensei stood in the doorway he had fixed. He had won his private room and lost it in the same breath. Jeon-min gripped his sleeve. The head servant was already climbing toward the master's rooms to report them. Whatever privacy Kensei had built, it would not survive the morning. He had bought them one night, and by dawn the master would hold proof against them both.
