Chapter 3

The head servant's keys faded up the path. Kensei did not wait for her to return with the master. He pulled Jeon-min from the storeroom into the cold dark. "We can't sleep here now," Kensei said. "They'll come for the door and for us." He had no bed of his own anymore, no coin, no blanket. A fallen lord owned nothing but the clothes he wore. He led Jeon-min across the grounds, away from the guesthouse windows. They stopped at the old library. Its stone front rose gray in the moonlight, vines crawling the walls, the tall doors shut for years. Kensei tried the handle. It gave. Dust and dead air met them inside. Towering shelves ran into the dark. No one came here. No enforcers, no gossiping cook. "Nobody's used this in a lifetime," Kensei said. "They won't look here tonight." They sat on the cold floor between two shelves. Jeon-min hugged his knees. His breath showed white. "No mats," he said. "No fire. Yesterday you slept on silk." He was a poet, and Kensei knew he was writing this misery into lines even now. "I traded it for a stone floor and a hunted night." "I traded it for you," Kensei said. Jeon-min looked up. Kensei took his cold hands. He had never said the whole of it out loud. He said it now. "I love you," Kensei said. "Not the room, not the silk. You. I gave my name away and my father and the warm bed, and I would give them again. I've never told you plain. So hear it plain. I love you." Jeon-min's eyes filled. He did not reach for a poem this time. "I love you too," he said. His voice cracked. "I was afraid to be your ruin." "You're not my ruin," Kensei said. "You're the reason I chose this." He pulled off his outer robe and wrapped it around them both. They pressed together against a shelf leg for warmth. Their stomachs ached with hunger. The cold seeped through the stone. But no eyes reached them here, and the words were said at last, and Jeon-min slept against his shoulder. Kensei stayed awake. He watched the doors. The library had hidden them for one night, but the master would learn by morning what the head servant carried in her ledger. Cold and hunger he could bear. The report he could not stop. He looked at the endless dark shelves around them and thought of the second thing this place held. If a forbidden love could hide in a forgotten library, so could forbidden pages. Somewhere in this dust, a law was written down. Laws could be answered by other laws. In the morning they would need food, and they would need a way to fight the ledger. Both waited for him here, on these shelves, if he could find them before the master's men found the door.
