Chapter 4

Morning gray crept through the tall windows. Kensei had not slept. He watched the doors while Jeon-min breathed against his shoulder. The library held them, but the head servant's ledger still moved toward the master. Kensei needed food, a law to fight the report, and a reason to keep his poet from despair. He rose and searched the shelves for hidden pages before the light grew. Jeon-min woke and found him gone from his side. He climbed to his feet, hugging himself in the cold. "You're pulling down books at dawn," he said. "Yesterday you were a lord. Now you're a thief in the dust." He was smiling, but his hands shook. Kensei knew that look. The poet made a joke when the fear got too big to say plainly. "I'm looking for a law," Kensei said. "One that answers the master's." Jeon-min stepped close. "And if there's no law here? If they come through those doors this hour?" Kensei set the book down. He had no answer for that. He had given away his name, his father, his warm bed. He could lose Jeon-min too, dragged off to the master's justice. The thought hollowed him out. He had never once shown his love with anything but words. Jeon-min's eyes filled. "I keep waiting for you to regret me," he whispered. Kensei crossed the last step between them. He took Jeon-min's cold face in both hands. Then he kissed him. He had wanted this since the first night in the storeroom and never dared. Now he dared. Jeon-min went still, then gripped Kensei's robe and kissed him back. The dust and the cold and the coming enforcers all fell away. For one breath there was only this. Kensei felt Jeon-min's tears wet against his own cheek. They broke apart. Jeon-min laughed, shaky and real. "You waited this long," he said. "A whole day of ruin, and now you kiss me." "I'm done waiting," Kensei said. "I want everything with you. Not hidden. Not in dust." The words changed something in him. He had run and hid and hoped. Now he wanted to fight. He turned back to the shelves with new purpose. Behind a fallen row of ledgers, his fingers found a scroll bound in cracked cord. The seal on it was the master's own crest, struck through with a black line. Suppressed. Someone had hidden this on purpose. Kensei carried it into the window light and broke the cord. The writing was old law. His breath caught. He could not read all of it yet, but one line stood clear near the top. "Jeon-min," he said. "This wasn't lost. It was buried." Jeon-min came to his shoulder and read. His face went pale, then fierce. The kiss had ended their hiding. This scroll would begin their fight.
