Chapter 48

Two years after the enrollment, the school held a graduation. Kensei stood in the polished hall under the gold-trimmed sign, the cylinder crest carved above the door. Ha-ni walked to the front in a small coat. She was four. She had finished every level the advanced school could teach. The teacher handed her a certificate for art, marked with the highest degree the school gave. Kensei's throat tightened. His daughter had done what no one thought a child could do. Beside her stood Jeon-min. He had not come only to watch. Over the two years, while Ha-ni climbed the school's levels, Jeon-min had studied its language courses at night. He earned his own certificate that same morning, a degree in languages. He held the paper flat and read the numbers on it once. "Two degrees," Jeon-min said. "One for her art. One for my languages. Two." Kensei laughed. He could not help it. They had walked into this rich school afraid of being turned away. Now they walked out with paper that named them scholars. They went home together. Ha-ni fell asleep before dark, her certificate on the shelf beside the old kamayaki book. Kensei latched the door to their room. He kissed Jeon-min, then kissed him again. He pulled the hanbok jacket from Jeon-min's shoulders and pressed his mouth to the bare skin there. Jeon-min laughed low and kissed him back, again and again, until they lost count. "We have everything we wanted," Kensei said. "Two houses. Five shops. A daughter smarter than the teachers. Papers with our names." Jeon-min did not answer at first. He lay still, his hand on Kensei's chest. "We have everything," Jeon-min said. "So why did you count it out loud?" Kensei stopped. He had counted it because he needed to hear it was real. And hearing it, he felt the gap under it. Ha-ni had finished the last school in the fifth city. The teacher's old words returned to him. Perhaps beyond it. There was nowhere left to send her. She was four, and she had already outgrown every book the city held. "She has nothing left to learn here," Kensei said. "Not in this city. Not in any of the five." Jeon-min sat up. He reached for his bag and pulled out the map he kept, the one marked with craftspeople across the cities. "Then we find where the learning is," Jeon-min said. "Same as I found the dyers. Same as we found the woman who read the blessing." Kensei looked at the certificates on the shelf. They had built a whole life in the fifth city and made it safe. Now the life fit their daughter the way a child's coat fits a grown body. To keep her, they would have to leave the place they had fought to stay. Kensei took the map from Jeon-min's hand and began to read the names.
