Chapter 49

They were kissing shirtless, closely, leaving lipstick on their necks while kissing when a man knocked on the door so they quickly cover up and opened the door "The king summons you," the clerk said. "He honors your daughter and your husband. A ceremony at the palace. Both certificates named. Your family named." Kensei read the words twice. His father had ordered him never to return. Now the same man called him back to stand in the grand hall, under the gold and the crest, and be seen. Kensei's old fear rose in his chest. To attend meant standing in front of every noble who once knew him as Hikari, then watched him fall. Jeon-min came to the door with Ha-ni on his hip. He read the letter over Kensei's shoulder. He did not flinch. "A ceremony," Jeon-min said. "For her art. For my languages. He wants to give us papers we already earned." "He wants to show us," Kensei said. "To the whole court." "Then let them look," Jeon-min said. "I will not hide her. I will not hide you. I said that at the market and I say it now." Ha-ni tugged the letter with one small hand. She studied the seal, then the ink. "The red mark is wax," Ha-ni said. "The black lines are your name. Both names. Two fathers." She looked up. "Is the palace where you were born?" Kensei knelt to her level. "It is," he said. "They took my name there once. They may not like that I have a new one." "But my name is on the paper too," Ha-ni said. "So we all go." Kensei looked at his daughter, then at Jeon-min. He had built a whole life to keep them safe from that hall. But the summons was not the old threat. It was the king naming their family out loud, in front of the court that once erased it. To refuse was to hide again. To go was to be seen and stay standing. He folded the letter. "We go," Kensei said. "All three." The clerk bowed and left. Kensei packed the two certificates in Jeon-min's bag, beside the kamayaki book and the map. He latched the bag shut. "When she finishes there," Kensei said, "we still leave to find her more school. The summons does not change that." "No," Jeon-min said. "First the palace. Then the road." At dawn they walked out with Ha-ni between them and turned toward the palace city Kensei had sworn never to enter again. The old fear walked with him. He did not turn back. He had chosen to be seen, and the choice pulled his family into the court that once cast him out.
