Seraphiel folded three of her wings close and bent over the celestial records, each eye scanning a different column of names. She searched for Gourdhollow in the logs of earthly interventions. The pages glowed softly under her gaze, listing every soul helped, every prayer answered, every act of grace bestowed by the hierarchy across centuries. Gourdhollow should be there. She had heard whispers of suffering in that place — the particular silence that meant people had stopped asking for help because they knew none would come. But the name never appeared. Not once in three hundred years. Seraphiel traveled there at dusk and found a village built around an ancient tree whose metallic leaves caught the fading light like captured stars. Children played beneath its branches. Women hung washing on lines strung between cottages. A man repaired a fence with quiet concentration. All of it ordinary, all of it unseen by anyone who could have mattered to the hierarchy. She stood at the edge of the village, her true form hidden, and counted seven families who had lived here for generations without a single angelic visit recorded. The tree had circuit patterns running through its trunk, proof that someone celestial had been here once, long ago. Then they had left and never returned. Seraphiel opened her record book and wrote the first entry Gourdhollow would ever receive.
