Chapter 1

Seraphiel folded three of her wings close and bent over the celestial records, each eye scanning a different column of names. She searched for Gourdhollow in the logs of earthly interventions. The pages glowed softly under her gaze, listing every soul helped, every prayer answered, every act of grace bestowed by the hierarchy across centuries. Gourdhollow should be there. She had heard whispers of suffering in that place — the particular silence that meant people had stopped asking for help because they knew none would come. But the name never appeared. Not once in three hundred years. Seraphiel traveled there at dusk and found a village built around an ancient tree whose metallic leaves caught the fading light like captured stars. Children played beneath its branches. Women hung washing on lines strung between cottages. A man repaired a fence with quiet concentration. All of it ordinary, all of it unseen by anyone who could have mattered to the hierarchy. She stood at the edge of the village, her true form hidden, and counted seven families who had lived here for generations without a single angelic visit recorded. The tree had circuit patterns running through its trunk, proof that someone celestial had been here once, long ago. Then they had left and never returned. Seraphiel opened her record book and wrote the first entry Gourdhollow would ever receive.

Chapter 2

Seraphiel had barely closed the record book when the air beside her split open. Someone was coming through, and not quietly. The light that spilled out was cold and administrative, the kind that made her eyes ache even though she had more than enough to spare. The auditor stepped through wearing a form like polished silver, carrying a case of scrolls under one arm. He didn't look at Seraphiel directly. Instead, he walked to where her record book sat and opened it without asking permission. His fingers found the Gourdhollow entry immediately. "Unauthorized," he said, reading aloud. "A village of seven families. Three centuries unrecorded. Beneath the hierarchy's notice." He pulled a stylus from his case and held it over the page. Seraphiel moved between him and the book, all her wings unfurling at once. "That entry is accurate," she said. "I was there. I witnessed it." The auditor finally looked at her. "Accuracy is irrelevant. The village was unrecorded because it was unworthy of record. You have wasted celestial resources on documentation that serves no purpose." He gestured with the stylus and the page began to shimmer, the ink lifting away like steam. Seraphiel didn't think. She reached into the dissolving text and pulled. The words came away in her hands, still glowing, still real. They condensed into something solid and strange — iron and glass forming around the rescued record, botanical growth spiraling up through the frame as if the village itself was taking root in her palms. The structure crystallized into a small greenhouse, spectral and shimmering, holding Gourdhollow's existence inside it like a rare plant that needed protection. The auditor stared at what she'd done. "You cannot preserve what has been judged invalid," he said, but his voice had changed. He sounded uncertain now. Seraphiel held the greenhouse carefully, feeling its weight. "I already have," she said. The auditor left without another word, but he didn't take the record with him. Seraphiel stood alone in the space between worlds, holding proof that Gourdhollow existed in her hands, knowing she had just made an enemy of the hierarchy she'd hoped would recognize her work.

Chapter 3

Seraphiel had known they would come back. She just hadn't expected it to be this soon. The air cracked open three days after the auditor's first visit, and this time two figures stepped through. The auditor she recognized, still polished and cold. The other was taller, wearing authority like a second skin, carrying nothing but presence. The taller one gestured and the space around them rippled, forming into something impossible. Coral formations bloomed from nothing, their branches glowing pink and blue and gold. Water that wasn't water flowed upward, pooling into chambers of swirling color. At the center, a throne appeared, ornate and final. The figure sat without ceremony. "Seraphiel Kindwatch," they said, and their voice had weight. "You are summoned to answer for unauthorized preservation of dissolved records." Seraphiel held the crystalline greenhouse tighter. She could argue. She could explain why Gourdhollow mattered, why centuries of quiet existence deserved witness. But the throne room around her was already built. The hierarchy hadn't come to listen. They had come to erase her standing entirely. So she made a different choice. She set the greenhouse down between them, directly on the coral floor, where it caught the strange light and glowed. "Then put it in the official record," she said. "That I was here. That I answered. That I refused." The figure on the throne studied her for a long moment. Then they waved one hand and the greenhouse shattered. Not destroyed — transformed. Each fragment became a small seed of light that scattered across the coral formations, embedding itself in the structure. The throne room now held Gourdhollow's record in a thousand pieces, impossible to fully remove without dismantling the hierarchy's own seat of judgment. The auditor made a sound like breaking glass. The figure on the throne stood. "You have made your position clear," they said. "So have we." They left. The throne room dissolved. Seraphiel stood alone again, empty-handed but not defeated. She had lost the greenhouse, but Gourdhollow's existence was now woven into the hierarchy's own architecture. They could strip her standing, but they would have to live with her defiance every time they sat in judgment.
