Chapter 2

Seraphiel had barely closed the record book when the air beside her split open. Someone was coming through, and not quietly. The light that spilled out was cold and administrative, the kind that made her eyes ache even though she had more than enough to spare. The auditor stepped through wearing a form like polished silver, carrying a case of scrolls under one arm. He didn't look at Seraphiel directly. Instead, he walked to where her record book sat and opened it without asking permission. His fingers found the Gourdhollow entry immediately. "Unauthorized," he said, reading aloud. "A village of seven families. Three centuries unrecorded. Beneath the hierarchy's notice." He pulled a stylus from his case and held it over the page. Seraphiel moved between him and the book, all her wings unfurling at once. "That entry is accurate," she said. "I was there. I witnessed it." The auditor finally looked at her. "Accuracy is irrelevant. The village was unrecorded because it was unworthy of record. You have wasted celestial resources on documentation that serves no purpose." He gestured with the stylus and the page began to shimmer, the ink lifting away like steam. Seraphiel didn't think. She reached into the dissolving text and pulled. The words came away in her hands, still glowing, still real. They condensed into something solid and strange — iron and glass forming around the rescued record, botanical growth spiraling up through the frame as if the village itself was taking root in her palms. The structure crystallized into a small greenhouse, spectral and shimmering, holding Gourdhollow's existence inside it like a rare plant that needed protection. The auditor stared at what she'd done. "You cannot preserve what has been judged invalid," he said, but his voice had changed. He sounded uncertain now. Seraphiel held the greenhouse carefully, feeling its weight. "I already have," she said. The auditor left without another word, but he didn't take the record with him. Seraphiel stood alone in the space between worlds, holding proof that Gourdhollow existed in her hands, knowing she had just made an enemy of the hierarchy she'd hoped would recognize her work.
