Chapter 10

Opening morning came clear and hot. Shelly walked the front gate at seven with the roster still folded in her pocket. The staff took their posts without being told. George ran a last check on the tower drop and gave her a thumbs up from the platform. At nine sharp, she cut the ribbon herself. The line at the gate stretched past the parking lot and around the block. By ten, the tall cactus slide was running full rotations. Kids screamed down the twin flumes and hit the pool in bright sheets of water. The sun deck filled. The cantina line moved fast. Shelly stood on the observation walkway and watched families pour in from the far end of the lot, past the shuttered marquee of the theater Malcolm had bought, past his dark arcade windows. They walked right by his properties to reach her gate. She counted heads until she lost count. Malcolm came through the side path a little after eleven. White suit, dark glasses, hands in his pockets. He stopped at the rail beside her and watched the pool below. "Impressive turnout," he said. "Half of them had reservations at my dinner room tonight. They cancelled this morning." Shelly kept her eyes on the slide. "You bought every building around me thinking I'd fold. You forgot people don't come out here for slot machines and stale popcorn. They come for this." She nodded at the water. "You can own every wall on the block, Malcolm. You can't own what's inside mine. That's what greed misses. It only knows how to buy." Malcolm's jaw tightened under the beard. He didn't answer. He turned and walked back the way he came. By closing, the register tape ran the length of the counter. The lifeguard team logged zero incidents. George handed Shelly his final invoice and she wrote the check on the spot. She sat on the edge of the empty pool as the lights dimmed and pulled out her phone. Three missed calls from Amina. One from a reporter. One from a number she didn't know, with a voicemail. She played it. A man's voice, calm and unfamiliar, said he represented a buyer interested in the parcels Malcolm currently held, and that his client wanted a meeting with her at her earliest convenience. Shelly lowered the phone. Malcolm's ring around her park had held for a year. Someone was moving on it now, and they wanted her at the table before they made the offer.
