Chapter 11

Shelly played the voicemail three more times that night and heard nothing new in it. A calm man. No name. A meeting on his terms. She called Bartholomew Bones at his hotel before sunrise. He answered on the second ring, that big warm voice already awake. She told him what she needed. A private room, a return call to the number on her phone, and his eyes on the guest register when the man arrived. Bartholomew agreed without hesitation. He said he would set the meeting for that evening in a corner suite and route the confirmation through the front desk so her name never touched the booking. Esther showed up at the park at noon with a canvas bag over one shoulder and a flat look under her straw hat. "You are not walking into a hotel room alone with a stranger," she said. "Don't argue." She pulled a small recorder from the bag and set it on the counter. "I sit in the corner. I press the button. Whatever he says, we own it after." Shelly started to protest and stopped. Esther was already halfway to the door. The suite sat on the fourth floor of the sun-shaped hotel, all glass and red stone. Bartholomew met them at the elevator, bowed once, and pointed them down the hall. The buyer stood when they entered. Gray suit, gray hair, a folder under one arm. He introduced himself as counsel for a private investment group and did not give a name Shelly recognized. He spoke plainly. His client wanted to buy her water park outright, at a number he wrote on a card and slid across the table. He would also acquire Malcolm's surrounding parcels within the month. "You walk away rich," he said. "We handle the rest." Esther sat in the corner chair with her bag on her lap. The recorder ran. Shelly looked at the card. She looked at the man. "No." She pushed the card back across the table. "I didn't build this to hand it to someone who thinks it's a number. You want the buildings around me, buy them from Malcolm. My gate is not for sale. Not to him. Not to you. Not for that. Not for ten times that." The man's mouth tightened. He said she was making a mistake. She stood and told him the meeting was over. In the hallway, Esther slid the recorder into her bag and clicked it off. Bartholomew was waiting at the elevator with the man's registration slip folded in his palm. He handed it to Shelly. A shipping company name. An address two states away. Shelly folded it into her pocket. She had a face now, a voice on tape, and a paper trail. Whoever they were, they would have to come at her known.
